The church of St. Martin is an ancient building of stone containing some Norman portions, including the nave and one bay of the chancel, the remainder being chiefly Perpendicular: it consists of chancel, nave, with clerestory on the north side, lighted by round-headed windows, aisles, south porch and a square embattled western tower containing a clock and 3 bells as well as a bell cote with sanctus bell: the whole fabric is embattled: the chancel arch and south doorway are Norman and the porch Perpendicular: the post-Reformation rood screen remains and is adorned with shields: in the organ chamber are some stones with matrices of brasses: and there are piscinae in the chancel and nave and a monument to Richard Wilson esq. of Scarborough, and founder of a seamen’s asylum there, d. 18 sept. 1837: on the north side of the chancel is an inscribed brass to Lucy (Knevett), wife of Sir Henry Gate, 1577: the tower was rebuilt in 1840, and the church was thoroughly restored in 1888, at a cost of £2,600, under the direction of Mr. C.
