SEDBERGH is a small market and union town, township, a polling place for the Northern division of the Riding, and parish, consisting of four hamlets, viz. Howgill with Bland, Frostrow with Soolbank, Cautlby with Dowbiggin and Marthwaite; it is in the western division of Staincliff and Ewcross wapentake, county court district of Kirkby Lonsdale, rural deanery of Clapham, archdeaconry of Richmond and diocese of Ripon. The town is situated in a pleasant, secluded valley, surrounded by lofty moors and fells, at the north-west extremity of the West Riding, on the borders of Westmorland, on the old coach road between Lancaster and Newcastle, about 10 miles east from Kendal, 11 north from Kirkby Lonsdale, 256 from London and 3 north-east from the confluence of the rivers Rathay and Lune. The station on the Lancaster, Carlisle and Ingleton line of the North Western railway is about a mile from the town. The church of St. Andrew is a very old stone building, chiefly in the Later Norman style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, two porches and a tower containing a clock and 3 bells, in scribed respectively “Haec Campana sacra Fiat Trinitati Beatae;” “Coelorum Xte placeat tibi rex Sonus iste;” and the third “Concipiens X. pla Virgo Coelum rega;” there are three stained windows and an alms-chest 200 years old: the font is of polished granite, ancient and very beautiful, and has been lately restored at the expense of the vicar: there is a monumental bust of Dr. Dawson, the mathematician, dated 1820; and a memorial tablet to “St. John Ottway, vice-chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster and Chancellor of ye County Pale, of Durham, 1693.” The register dates for burials and marriages from the year 1594 and for baptisms from 1605, but the early portion is in bad condition through damp. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £400, in the gift of Trinity College. Cambridge, and held by the Rev. George Platt M.A. of that college, honorary canon of Ripon. The Wesleyan chapel, erected in 1864, is a stone structure octagonal in plan. The Congregationalists, Wesleyan Methodists and Baptists have each chapels in the township, and there is a meeting house for the society of Friends. There are charities of about £150 yearly value, distributed among poor householders not receiving parochial relief, and almshouses for six poor widows, erected and endowed by the late Thomas Palmer esq. The market is held on Wednesday and is of small importance, but has a considerable trade in butter. Fairs are held on the 26th of February, 20th of March, 28th of April and 29th of October for cattle; and pleasure fairs on the Wednesday in Whitsun week and the first Wednesday after the 3rd of October. The public hall, erected in 1865, at a cost of about £700, is a building of stone calculated to hold about 400 persons, and is used for public meetings, concerts and lectures; the county magistrates also hold their sittings here every alternate Wednesday. A police station was built in 1864. The Market House and Reading Room was erected in 1858, by the Rev. John Harrison Evans M.A. formerly headmaster of the Grammar school, the cost being in part defrayed by a fund raised by his former pupils, to present him with a testimonial of their esteem and regard and applied at his request to this purpose. The Sedbergh Agricultural society holds its meetings annually on or about the 4th of October; and there is also a Horticultural society holding yearly exhibitions; an old established book club, and a lending library for the use of the working classes. About miles north-north-east from the town on the borders of Westmorland, is Cautley spout, a waterfall of nearly 70 feet. Charles Walter Strickland esq. is lord of the manor, for which courts are held triennially. The principal landowners are the Earl of Bective M.P. C. Upton-Cottrell-Dormer esq. Robert Willan esq.
