Historical Description
Selby is a brisk market-town, situated on the banks of the river Ouse, eight miles north from Snaith. There is a very handsome wooden bridge here, much admired by strangers. The church must have been an elegant Gothic structure. In 1690 part of this beautiful edifice, with half of the steeple, fell down suddenly. It has since been rebuilt.
The only monuments of consequence in Selby church are two knights and a lady, and a slab for Abbot Selby, 1504. The ancient wooden stalls remain in the choir. At the southwest corner of the church they shew the room, now in ruins, where they say Henry I. was born, but it is rather the building of some abbot: the walls are painted with large figures of religious with scrolls, and on the cornice at top is the following imperfect inscription: Sacre domus ure conslructum eat istud adificium per Rob. Deping abbatem hujus monasterii.
Robert Deping was abbot here from 1504 to 1518.
A handsome Gothic cross has been set up in the marketplace.
Here are the remains of an extensive monastery, which was destroyed at the dissolution of religious houses.
Selby has a good Grammar School, founded by Edward VI. and well endowed.
William the Conqueror founded an abbey at Selby, on account of its being the birthplace of his son Henry I. The abbots sat in parliament.
By the canal from hence communicating with the Aire and Calder navigation with Leeds, Selby becomes the unloading port into the West Riding of Yorkshire.
Here is a good market on Monday. The fine drawbridge over the Ouse was erected in the latter part of the eighteenth century, and facilitates the communication with the East Riding.
The soil in the neighbourhood of Selby is various, part of it sandy, and part a hazel clay. The chief proprietors are Lord Petre, and the Archbishop of York. There are also a great number of copyholders. A considerable quantity of woad, or rather weld for dyers, is raised in this neighbourhood; it is sown with red clover, and when it is in full bloom it is pulled by women and boys who go before the mowers. It grows well upon all land fit for turnips, and is frequently taken by itself as a crop. Large quantities of potatoes are also raised in this parish, and near the town a great deal of flax is grown, which is almost all cleaned and dressed in the country; a small proportion is allowed to stand for seed.
The warp lands in this neighbourhood are peculiarly rich. The warp is deposited upon lands adjoining the rivers Ouse and Aire, by means of sluices which admit and retain the water until the sediment is obtained. Upon such land they do not venture to sow wheat, as it stands in danger of being perished, but from the richness of the soil great crops of spring corn are raised.
SELBY is a market and union town, head of a county court district and polling place for the Eastern division of the Riding, parish and railway station, in the lower division of Barkston Ash, archdeaconry and rural deanery of Selby, and diocese of York, distant 178 miles from London, 15 south from York, 30 ¾ west from H ull, 20 east from Leeds, 14 northwest from Goole, 19 north from Doncaster, and is situated on the navigable river Ouse, which separates it from the East Riding. There is direct railway communication with York, Hull and Leeds, the opening of the York and Doncaster branch of the North Eastern railway having placed Selby on the main line for the Great Northern express trains from London to the North. which stop at Selby. The North Eastern railway is carried over the Ouse. There is a canal from the Ouse at Selby to the river Aire. The Local Board of Health was constituted in 1851 and consists of nine members. The water for the supply of the town is obtained from an artesian well, 330 feet below the surface, whence it is pumped into a tank containing 150,000 gallons. The town is tolerably well built, paved and lighted. The church of St. Mary and St. Germain, formerly conventual, was a richly endowed abbey, founded by William the Conqueror in 1069 for Benedictine monks, and became one of the most wealthy foundations in the North of England, the abbot being one of the only two mitred abbots north of the Trent: the church is a large and magnificent cruciform building 300 feet in length and about 59 feet in width, with a central tower of Norman work, which fell in the year 1690, crushing the south transept, and was rebuilt in 1702; it contains a peal of 8 bells: the nave is Norman and Early English, and the transept Norman, with later additions and insertions, and a good Perpendicular chapel: the western front, containing a very fine Norman doorway, is of Mixed design, conjectured to have been considerably altered by the Knights Templars: the choir, 140 feet in length, is of the richest period of Decorated Gothic, and the symmetry of its design vies in beauty with the singularly rich detail: the groining and interior arrangement of this part of the church are very fine, and the details particularly good: the chapter house remains, and there are. Some indications of the cloisters on the south side, but the south transept is destroyed: there is some very fine stone screen work and a little very good ancient stained glass: the whole of this church is remarkable, and deserves careful examination: there are some modern brasses, dating from 1710 to 1863: and still remaining are several slabs (but in a very much mutilated condition), with inscriptions to the various abbots and priors of Selby; there are also monuments to the family of Morritt of Rokeby, who sprang from this neighbourhood, and to that of Bacon, with whom they intermarried, Mrs. Beatrix Bacon, who died in 1724, being the donor of land bequeathed to the use of the Presbyterian chapel of Selby: the church is adorned by various stained windows of modern design, three of which are in the south aisle: the east window is a very fine specimen of fourteenth century workmanship, and though in a mutilated condition is considered one of the finest of this period in England; it consists of seven lights, and was originally intended to illustrate the genealogy of Christ; the subject has long ceased to exist in a complete form, but there may still be traced at the top of the window the figure of our Lord sitting in Judgment: the higher east window, which opens into the choir roof, is also of great beauty; the organ, was rebuilt and placed, under Sir G. G. Scott, on the south of the choir: part of the roof was restored to its original pitch in 1873. The register dates from the year 1620. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £300, in the gift of the Archbishop of York, and held by the Rev. Francis Whaley Harper M.A. Canon of York, formerly fellow of St. John’s College, Cambridge. St. James’ is an ecclesiastical parish formed in 1867. The church was commenced on the 4th of May, 1866, the foundation stone being laid on that day by the late Jamas Audus esq. J.P. a resident and native of Selby, at whose sole expense it was built; Mr. Audus, besides erecting the church, made a grant of land immediately adjoining as a Bite for a parsonage, which has since been built; and art ranged with the Ecclesiastical Commissioners to invest with them the sum of £3,000 towards an endowment; the income ultimately, by grants from the Commissioners, to be raised to £300 a year; the entire cost to Mr. Audus and his family of the church and endowment and the land for the parsonage is computed at £14,000: the style of architecture is 12th century Gothic: the design comprises a chancel with vestry on the north side, nave with aisles, and an organ chamber on the south: at the west end is a tower containing 3 bells and surmounted by a spire; the roof is supported by arcaded columns of red polished Isle of Mull granite, with capitals of Ancaster stone: the east and west windows are stained, and the latter, a fine composition, cost upwards of £300, and is erected as a memorial to the founder and the late Mrs. Audus. The register dates from the year 1867. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £300 with residence, in the gift of Simeon’s Trustees, and held by the Rev. Edward Sampson, of the Church Missionary College, Islington. Audus’ almshouses, endowed with £90 yearly for 14 persons, and several charities, are managed and dispensed by a Board under the title of the Selby United Charities, possessing an aggregate income of £200 yearly. The Catholic Church of St. Mary, erected in 1856 by the Hon. Mrs. Petre, is a handsome cruciform stone building in the Early Decorated Gothic style, with an elegant porch, and has a tower surmounted by a steeple of considerable height; it cost £6,000 and will seat about 500 persons. Here are Congregational, Wesleyan, Primitive Methodist chapels, and also Brethren and Unitarians. The cemetery, on the Doncaster road, comprises three acres, and has two mortuary chapels. Here is a large and handsome drill hall, built in 1862, at a cost of about £1,300, and serving as the head quarters of the 1st West Riding Yorkshire volunteers. The market day is Monday. Fairs are held on Easter Tuesday, Monday after June 22 and October 8th for horses, cattle and wool. In the Marketplace stands a Gothic cross, erected about 1790 by Lord Petre. The police force of the town consists of 1 superintendent, 2 sergeants and 5 constables. The Mechanics' Institute and Public Rooms are situated in Park street. The trades carried on here are flax scutching, sail-making, rope-making, boat and barge building, tanning, brewing and malting and iron founding; the town has aIso been celebrated for nearly a century for the manufacture of patent shoe threads, sail and roping, netting twines, and boot and shoe sole sewing machine threads, a branch of industry at present carried on by the firm of Ryder and sons. Lord Londesborough is lard of the manor and a liberal patron of all the institutions in the town. The principal landowners are the representatives of Lady Moore and William Paver esq. Selby is in the centre of a rich agricultural district, through which the river Ouse flows. Potatoes, flax and mustard are cultivated to a great extent in the neighbourhood, The soil is sand and gravel; subsoil, clay. The area is 3,269 acres; rateable value, £18,556; and the population of the parish in 1871 was 6,193.
