Historical Description

SESSAY is a parish, township and pleasant village, with a station on the main line of the North Eastern railway, and is 1 mile north from the Pilmoor junction, on the Leeds, Pickering and Whitby section of the same railway, of 6 ¾ north-north-west from Easingwold, 10 east-north-east from Ripon and 7 south-south-east from Thirsk. Sessay is in the Thirsk and Malton division of the Riding, Allertonshire wapentake, petty sessional division of Birdforth, Thirsk union and county court district, and in the rural deanery of Thirsk, archdeaconry of Cleveland and diocese of York; for taxation and other county purposes it is included in the division of Allertonshire. The church, of St. Cuthbert, rebuilt by William Henry, 7th Viscount Downe, in 1847—8, is an edifice of stone in the Gothitr style of the 14th century, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and tower with spire containing 3 bells: on the floor of the chancel is a brass with effigy in cassock, surplice, almuce and cope to Thomas Magnus, archdeacon of the East Riding and rector here, ob. 1550: below is an inscription and a shield of arms, and at the corners of the slab are modified roundels: all the different portions are palimpsest: the church was restored in 1883 at a cost of £525, and affords 300 sittings. The register dates from the year 1612. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £412, including 66 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Viscount Downe, and held since 1912 by the Rev. Francis Henry Payne-Gallwey M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge. Viscount Downe K.C.V.O., C.B., C.I.E. is lord of the manor and owns all the land, excepting the glebe. The soil is loamy; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and beans. The area of the township is 3,033 acres; rateable value, £10,872; the population in 1911 was 268 in the township and 395 in the parish.
