Historical Description

SETTRINGTON is a parish, township and village, pleasantly seated at the foot of the Wolds, with a station on the Malton and Driffield branch of the North Eastern railway, 3 miles south-east from Malton, 33 ½ from Thirsk and 16 ½ south-west from Driffield, in the Buckrose division of the Riding, Buckrose wapentake and petty sessional division, Malton union and county court district, rural deanery of Settrington, archdeaconry of the East Riding and diocese of York. This place gives the title of baron to the Lennox family, Dukes of Richmond and Gordon. The church of All Saints is an ancient edifice of stone, in the Norman and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles and an embattled western tower with pinnacles, containing 3 bells: the east and west windows are stained: the south doorway is an interesting example of the Transition Norman period, and there is a curious old font: the church affords sittings for 350 persons. The register dates from the year 1600. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £850, including 1,100 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Earl Brownlow, and held since 1902 by the Rev. Arthur Johnson M.A. of Clare College, Cambridge. The Wesleyan chapel here, built in 1891, will seat 100 persons. Settrington House, now in the occupation of Charles Oswin Hall esq. J.P. is a mansion of stone, situated in a well-wooded park, through which winds a small stream: in front of the park is a small lake. Lord Middleton is lord of the manor and principal landowner. The soil varies; the eastern part of the parish lies on the chalk wold; the western on the oolitic hills, and these are separated by a bed of Kimmeridge clay and sand; subsoil, various. The chief crops are turnips, oats and barley. The area of the township is 4,890 acres of land and 8 of water; rateable value, £6,219; the population in 1911 was 495 in the township and 712 in the parish.
