Historical Description

SHADWELL is a township, village and ecclesiastical parish, formed in 1844 from the parish of Thomer, 5 miles north-east from Leeds, in the Eastern division of the Riding, petty sessional division of Lower Skyrack, lower division of the Skyrack wapentake, Wetherby union, Leeds county court district, rural deanery of Whitkirk, archdeaconry of Craven and Ripon diocese. The church of St. Paul is a small stone building, in the Norman style, consisting of chancel, nave, transept and a small belfry with 1 bell; the church has a piscina and sedilia; in the chancel are three stained windows; there are, besides, six other richly stained windows. The register of baptisms and marriages dates from 1842, of burials from 1862. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £140, in the gift of the vicar of Thorner and held by the Rev. William Smith M.A. of St. Peter's College, Cambridge. There is a Wesleyan chapel. Here is situated the Leeds Certified Industrial school for 150 boys, the buildings and grounds of which occupy 20 acres of land; boys are sent to this institution by order of the magistrates, and, in addition to elementary education, are taught various useful trades: the whole arrangements are under the management of the Leeds school board: superintendent, Richard Felix Thomas; visitors are admitted on the first Thursday in every month. The trustees of Lady Hastings are the chief landowners, and John Musgrave Sagar-Mussrrave esq. J.P. of Red Hall, is lord of the manor. The soil is clayey; subsoil limestone, clay and sand. The chief crops are wheat, oats and barley. The population of the township in 1871 was 454, and of the ecclesiastical parish 535; the area of the township is 1,499 acres; rateable value, £5,982.
