Historical Description

SHAROW is a township, village and ecclesiastical parish, partly in the North Riding, formed in 1829 from the parish of Ripon, one mile east from Ripon, in the liberty, manor, union, county court district, rural deanery and diocese of Ripon, Richmond archdeaconry, and Northern division of the Riding, situated on a hill within half a mile of Ripon railway station. The church of St. John is a handsome stone building, erected in 1825, consisting of chancel, nave and four stained windows: the tower, which is square, embattled and pinnacled, contains 8 bells: the church was greatly improved in 1877 at a cost of £1,400, by the addition of a new chancel: it was also re-seated. The register dates from the year 1825. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £300 with residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Ripon, and held by the Rev. Edmund Gray, M.A. of University College, Durham. The Archbishop of York is lord of the manor: the Rev. S. H. Powell, M.A. and the Marquis of Ripon are the chief landowners. Fair Lawn is the seat of William Garnett esq. J.P. The soil is light, sandy and clay; the subsoil is red clay and red rock. The chief crops are turnips, barley and wheat. The population of the township in 1871 was 308; and the area is 723 acres; rateable value £4,041; the population of the ecclesiastical parish in 1871 was 790; the area is 5,981 acres.

The school (mixed), is partly endowed, & is also used as a Sunday school; Edwin Williams, master.
