Historical Description

SHELF is a village, township and ecclesiastical parish, formed in 1851 from the parishes of Bradford and Halifax, in the Northern division of the Aiding, parish, union and county court district of Halifax, Morley wapentake, rural deanery of Halifax, archdeaconry of Craven and Ripon diocese, 4 miles south-west from Bradford and northeast from Halifax, on the road from Halifax to Bradford. The parish is governed by a Local Board of Health of 9 members. The church of St. Michael was erected and endowed by the late John Hardy esq. of Low Moor, and his son, the late Charles Hardy esq. and consecrated on the 14th of June, 1850: there is a turret with 2 bells; the east and west windows are stained; an organ was erected in 1858, and a new organ chamber constructed in 1830. The register dates from the 14th of June, 1850. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £200 with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Ripon and held by the Rev. Thomas Alexander Aylmer Hughes M.A. of Trinity College, Dublin. There are Wesleyan and Primitive Methodist chapels, and one for the United Methodist Free Church, erected in 1853, at a cost of £1,400, defrayed by voluntary contributions. Coal, ironstone and freestone of excellent quality abound in the township, and there are also manufactories of worsted and damask and extensive chemical works. The Earl of Scarbrough is lord of the manor. The principal landowners are the trustees of the late John Sunderland esq. of Coley Hall, Captain Dearden, Samuel Bottomley esq. and the Low Moor Iron Company. The soil is light; subsoil, gravel and freestone. The chief crops are grass and wheat. The area is 1,302 acres; rateable value, £7,915 18s. 11d.; and the population in 1871, of township, 3,091; Local Board district, 3,091; entire parish of St. Michael, 4,616; the area of which is 1,478 acres.
