Historical Description

SHEPLEY is a village, township and ecclesiastical parish, formed in 1849 from the parish of Kirkburton, having a station on the Sheffield and Huddersfield (Lancashire and Yorkshire) railway, 6 miles north-west from Penistone, 7 south-east from Huddersfield and 19 north-west from Sheffield, in the Southern division of the Riding, upper division of the wapentake of Agbrigg, Huddersfield petty sessional division, union, county court district, rural deanery and archdeaconry of Craven and Ripon diocese, situated in a valley near the source of the Dearne. The parish is governed by a Local Board of Health of nine members. The church of St. Paul, built in 1848, is a stone building in the Pointed style, consisting of chancel, added in 1868, nave and north aisle; an organ chamber has been constructed in the chancel, and an organ erected at a cost of over £600: the east window has been given by the late W. J. Kenyon esq. of Millfield, as a memorial to one of Ms children. The register dates from the year 1848. The living is a perpetual curacy, yearly value £300 with house, in the gift of the vicar of Kirkburton and held by the Rev. Thomas Newton B.A. of Trinity College, Dublin, late headmaster of King James’ Grammar school, Almondbury. There are chapels for the Wesleyans and for the Methodist New Connexion. There are several woollen manufactories and stone quarries. Sir Joseph P.P. Radclive bart. is lord of the manor; the trustees of Joseph and Thomas Firth. Messrs. Barnicot and Kenyon, Messrs. Senior and sons and John Turner esq. are chief landowners. The soil is clayey; subsoil, grit. The. chief crops are corn, oats and barley. The area is 1,247 acres; rateable value, £4,973; and the population in 1871 was 1,507.
