Historical Description

Shirburne, where King Athelstan had a palace, which he gave, with great part of the town, to the Archbishop of York; out of the ruins of which the parish church is supposed to have been erected.—Here is an Hospital and Free-school, founded by Robert Hungate, with exhibitions to St. John’s College, Cambridge.

SHERBURN is a civil parish and village, of considerable extent, situated near the Derwent, three-quarters of a male south from Weaverthorpe station on the York and Scarborough section of the North Eastern railway, 12 miles south-west from Scarborough by road, 9 ¼ by railway 12 east from Malton and 34 ½ north-east from York, in the Buckrose division of the Riding, Buckrose wapentake and petty sessional division, union and county court district of Scarborough, rural deanery of Settrington, archdeaconry of the East Riding and diocese of York. The Church of St. Hilda is an ancient edifice of stone in mixed styles, and dates back to 1060, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and a portion of a western tower containing 8 bells, and a clock added in 1911: the chancel is divided from the nave by a splendid Norman arch with zigzag mouldings; the font, of stone, is circular and of early date: the restoration of the church was commenced in 1909 and completed in 1912 at the cost of Sir Tatton Sykes bart.; the work of restoration included the lengthening of the nave, and the addition of two side aisles: a new oak altar and pulpit were provided, and the church was reseated in the same wood. During the course of the work considerable portions of the original church were discovered, including the pillars of the old north wall, the original foundations on the north side and a northern chancel arch leading into an old chapel: there is a marble monument to Matthew Rivis, formerly of this parish, and 44 years agent to the Wykeham Abbey estate: a stained window was erected in 1873 to Mary Rivis, by whom also the stained east window was presented in 1859: in 1901 a tablet was erected to Mrs. Norris, and in 1903 an inscribed mural brass was erected by public subscription to the memory of two volunteers, natives of the parish, who died in South Africa during the Boer war: there were once two chantries on the north side, and a piscina and a doorway belonging to these still remain: the church affords 250 sittings. The register dates from the year 1653. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £203, including 17 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of York, and held since 1905 by the Rev. James Whittam L.Th. of Hatfield Hall, Durham. The impropriated tithe amounts to £64. There are Wesleyan Methodist and Primitive Methodist chapels here. The charities amount to £1 yearly, besides which the late John Lamplough, in 1896, left £100 to be invested by his trustees and the interest to be distributed among the deserving poor. Capt. the Hon. John Dawnay D.S.O. of Wykenam, is lord of the manor and chief landowner. The soil is peat, sand and clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley and turnips. The area is 4,736 acres of land and 2 of water; rateable value, £4,355; the population in 1911 was 717.

SHERBURN RURAL DISTRICT COUNCIL

Meets at the Board Room, Scarborough, 4th Thursday in each month, at 12 noon.

The district comprises the townships of Folkton, Ganton, Muston, Sherburn & Willerby, being the East Riding townships in Scarborough union, with the exception of Filey. The area is 21,078 acres; rateable value, £19,318; the population in 1911 was 2,254.

Public Elementary School (mixed), rebuilt in 1893, for 160 children; average attendance, 150.
