The church of All saints, standing on high ground, is an ancient building, restored in 1857, and is now a very fine specimen of ecclesiastical architecture, said to have been originally built out of the ruins of a palace which the Archbishops of York formerly had here, consisting of a massive tower embattled and surmounted by four pinnacles and containing a clock and 6 bells dated 1750, except treble, which is dated 1875, and the tenor and fifth bell, recast in 1878, and a chancel, nave of pure Norman architecture with clerestory, aisles, mortuary chapel south porch: the south aisle contains stained windows presented by Cecily George Saville Foljambe esq. and the present vicar in memory of their wives: in the mortuary chapel is a curious old monument bearing no date, but representing the Crucifixion. The register dates from the year 1639, but is in bad condition, being mostly illegible up to and including 1676. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £300, in the gift of the Archbishop of York, and held by the Rev. James Matthews M.A. of Wadham College, Oxford. The Wesleyans have a chapel here. The York City and County Banking Company have a sub-branch here, open on Wednesday from eleven to one o’clock. Thomas Plant, of Kippax, bequeathed in 1770 the sum of £100, the interest of which is distributed to the poor of Sherburn on St. Thomas’ Day. The town and its vicinity are famed for the growth of a plum called wine-sours, of a peculiarly fine flavour and in much request for preserving. In a field called the Hall garth are the foundations of an old palace of King Athelstan. Near the railway station are large brick and the works carried on by Mr. James Backhouse. Lady Ashtown is lady of the manor and principal landowner. The soil is alluvial and limestone; subsoil, clay and limestone rock. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and turnips. The area of the township is 4,639 acres; rateable value £12,520; population in 1871, 1,542; the area of the parish is 13,270 acres; the population 3,884.
