Liotherton-cum-Aberford History
Liotherton-cum-Aberford is a village and township and chapelry in the parish of Sherburn, 5 ½ miles south from Tadcaster and 3 north-west from Sherburn. The chapel is a very ancient building, consisting: of chancel and nave, and has 1 bell; service is performed in it once a year only, for which the vicar of Sherburn receives £6 13s. 4d. Lotherton Hall, a pleasant residence, overlooking a small park, is the property of Lady Ashtown, who is lady of the manor and chief landowner; it is at present the residence of Mrs. Shawe. The soil is clay and limestone; subsoil the same. The chief crops are wheat, barley and roots. The joint township has an area of 1,092 acres; rateable value £1,705; population in 1871, 486.
