Historical Description

SHERIFF HUTTON is a parish, township and large and ancient village, pleasantly situated on an acclivity, on the north of the river Foss, and is 2 ½ miles north-west from Flaxton station on the York and Malton section of the North Eastern railway, 10 north-east-by-north from York and 9 south-west from Malton, in the Thirsk and Malton division of the Riding, Bulmer wapentake, Malton union and county court district, petty sessional division of Bulmer East, rural deanery of Easingwold, archdeaconry of Cleveland and diocese of York. The church of St. Helen and the Holy Cross is an ancient building of stone, in the Decorated and Early English styles, with later insertions, and was repaired in 1837, and re-pewed in 1838, chiefly at the cost of the late Lady Gordon: it consists of chancel with two chapels, nave, aisles, and an embattled western tower containing a clock and 3 bells: the lower part of the tower forms a porch: under a window of the north aisle, or Wytham chapel, is the recumbent effigy of a knight in chain armour; in the same aisle is a tomb of alabaster and marble of the 15th century, with a small robed effigy, coroneted, to Edward, Prince of Wales, only son of Bichard III. and Queen Anne Neville, who died in infancy 31 Mar. 1484; the front of the tomb is adorned with figures of angels holding shields, and in the centre is a figure representing the Trinity: the windows in the north aisle retain fragments of heraldic glass of the Neville and Dacre families; the stained east window is a memorial to Mary Rowlay, who was once Connected with this parish, and there is a memorial window in the south aisle to Mrs. Pearson: the reredos of stone was erected in 1887 by Marcus Flowers, H.M. Consul in Japan, as a memorial to his brother, the Rev. Octavius Henry Flowers B.A. vicar here 1857—80: the centre panel contains a representation of the “Last supper,” and on either side are canopied niches, inclosing figures of the Evangelists: on the south side of the chancel is a private chapel, belonging to the Duke of Sutherland: on the wall of the chapel hang a helmet, gauntlet and spurs and a tattered funeral banner; on the floor of the chancel is a brass to Mary, wife of Henry Hall esq. of East lulling, ob. 1657: there is also a small brass to two children dated 1491, and in the vestry a wooden panel inscribed to Robert Fletcher, sometime clerk of parish, who died in 1635: a new organ was erected in March, 1893, at a cost of £300, and a brass lectern has been presented by Joseph Talbor esq.: a pulpit of stone and marble and oak choir stalls have also been provided: there are 500 sittings. The register dates from the year 1627. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £289, with residence, in the gift of the Archbishop of York and Mrs. Lascelles alternately, and held since 1905 by the Rev. James Rigby M.A., B.C.L. of Durham University. There are Wesleyan and Primitive Methodist chapels. The charities include Bichard Winter’s charity, consisting of 9 acres of land at Cornborough; Christopher Richardson’s, consisting of a field of 4 acres at West Lilling; Phillis Kirk’s of £68 0s. 11d. in Consols; the Poor stock charity of £210 11s. 9d. in Consols; John Hodgson’s coal charity of £310 9s. 1d. in Consols; Adamson’s of £8 10s. 1d. in Consols, and the rent of about 13 ½ acres of land at Flaxton, usually producing about £27 a year. A hiring fair for servants is held here on the second Wednesday in Martinmas week. An entire horse show is held here every year on the first Tuesday in April. In the centre of the village are the ruins of an ancient castle built in the year 1140 by Bertram de Bulmer, son of Ascitel de Bulmer. After the murder of Edward V. and his brother, Richard III. imprisoned in this castle, for upwards of two years, Edward Plantagenet, Earl of Warwick, and the Princess Elizabeth, eldest daughter of Edward IV. Both of these royal prisoners remained here in confinement till Bichard was slain at the battle of Bosworth Field. The ruins, which consist chiefly of portions of the walls and towers, are quadrangular in form with a large open court in the centre and lofty square towers at each angle. Sheriff Hutton Park is the seat of John Coates esq.; the mansion is a large and ancient building, pleasantly situated near the centre of a park of 212 acres, including wood and water. The Hon. E. F. Lindley Wood M.A., M.P. of Temple Newsam, West Yorkshire, who is lord of the manor, John Coates esq. M.A., J.P. the trustees of Henry Rogerson, Mrs. H. W. W. Wilberforce, the Hon. Rosalind Frances, Dowager Countess of Carlisle and Messrs. Hildyard, of Scarborough and York, are the principal landowners. The soil is a mixed one; the subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and beans. The area of the township, including Coraborough and sheriff Hutton Moor, is 5,324 acres of land and 9 of water; rateable value, £6,100; the population of the township in 1911 was 670, and in the parish 941.
