Lillings-Ambo History

LILLINGS-AMBO, or East and West Lilling, form a township in the parish of sheriff Hutton, about 2 miles south from sheriff Hutton, and 9 north-east from York, in York union, and comprise the villages of East and West Lilling; the latter is a small village, but East Lilling consists only of three farms, and the Hall, a plain mansion, occupied by Mrs. Holtby. The Hon. Edward F. Lindley Wood M.A., M.P. of Temple Newsam, William Abel Wood esq. of Haxby Hall, and John Carlton esq. of York, are the chief landowners. The area is 1,767 acres of land and a of water; rateable value, £1,793. and the population in 1911 was 20.
