Historical Description

SHIPLEY is a township, ecclesiastical parish (formed in 1828 out of the parish of Bradford), village and railway station and is a polling place for the Northern division of the Riding, in the wapentake of Morley, North Bierley union, county court district and rural deanery of Bradford, archdeaconry of Craven and diocese of Ripon, distance 3 miles north from Bradford, 3 ¼ south-east from Bingley, 11 northeast from Halifax, 11 north-west from Leeds, 15 ¼ from Skipton, 30 ¼ from Settle and 197 ½ from London, situated on the south bank of the river Aire, at the junction of the Leeds and Bradford with the Bradford, Skipton and Colne railway, near the junction of the Bradford and Leeds and Liverpool canals, having communication by rail and canal with all parts of the country. The church of St. Paul is a large building in the Gothic style, erected in 1825, and consists of channel, nave, aisles and tower with 8 bells it is capable of seating 1,200 persons, and has a good organ and a clock with 4 dials and chimes which strike the hours and quarters: the church was thoroughly restored and re-seated with oak benches in 1876, at a cost of £5,000. The register dates from the year 1826. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £426 with residence, in the gift of the Trustees of the late Rev. Charles Simeon and held by the Rev. William Kelly B.A. of Trinity College, Dublin. The Catholic church, dedicated to St. Mary, is a stone building situated in Victoria park, and was formerly used as the school-house. The Baptists, Wesleyans and Piimitive Methodists have each a chapel. The Baptist chapel, opened in 1866, is a handsome stone building, erected at a cost of nearly £7,000, and is calculated to hold 1,000 persons: there is a north annexe, containing class-rooms, a cottage, three vestries and an orchestra. There are factories for the manufacture of worsted, and several quarries. The land is in general rich, and the landscape, in some parts, very picturesque, opening into the well-wooded and beautiful district of Lower Airedale. A local board of health was established in 1853. Gas works, supplying Shipley, Windhill and the neighbourhood, were built in 1846—7. At Victoria Park, a short distance from the town, are several good residences. The Countess of Rosse is lady of the manor. The landowners are numerous. The soil is rather light; subsoil, gravel and sand. The land is chiefly in pasture. The area is 1,406 acres; rateable value, £52,595 16s. 6d.; and the population in 1871 was 8,257; including Saltaire, 11,757. The area is, of the ecclesiastical parish. 2,729 acres.
