Historical Description

SHIPTON THORPE is a parish comprising the townships of Shipton and Thorpe-le-Street, the former being taken from Market Weighton and the latter from Nunburnbolme, and united, July 7, 1876, as a parish under the name of Shipton Thorpe, in the Howdenshire division of the Riding, Holme Beacon division of Barthill wapentake, Holme Beacon petty sessional division, Pocklington union and county court district, rural deanery of Weighton, archdeaconry of the East Riding and diocese of York. Shipton township has a station called Londesborough, on the York, Market Weighton and Beverley branch of the North Eastern railway, 2 miles west-by-north from Market Weighton. The church of All Saints is an ancient building of stone, of the Norman period, consisting of chancel with aisles, nave, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles, containing 2 bells: the doorway is adorned with beak-head moulding: the church, with the exception of the tower, was thoroughly restored in 1883, under the direction of Mr. James Demaine. architect, at a cost of £876, the interior being refloored and reseated, a new roof fixed and new south porch erected: the fine brass lectern was given by Mrs. Forge; the communion chairs by Mr. and Miss Myers, and the carved stone font by the architect: in 1901 a porch and lych-gate were erected at the entrance to the churchyard in memory of Mary Boyes, at a cost of £200: there are 163 sittings. The register dates from the year 1675. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £225, with residence, erected in 1878, at a cost of £1,500, in the gift of the Archbishop of York, and held since 1876 by the Rev. Thomas Charles Westmorland M.A. of St. Peter’s College, Cambridge. There is a Wesleyan chapel and a Primitive Methodist chapel, rebuilt in 1867. The only charity is Miss Barker’s dole, which is given in bread yearly. The Earl of Londesborpugh K.C.V.O. who is lord of the manor, E. M. Fawcett esq. Mr. Henry John Smith, of Shipton, and Thomas Coates esq. of Harrogate, are the principal landowners. The soils are sandy, gravelly and clayey. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and turnips. The area of Shipton township is 1,475 acres; rateable value, £2,535; the population in 1911 was 362 in the township and 396 in the parish.

Public Elementary School, erected in 1872 & enlarged in 1893, at the expense of the Misses Boyes, for 106 children; average attendance, 70; the school has an endowment of £7 14s. yearly, derived from land belonging to the Earl of Londesborongh & H. G. Langdale esq.
