Historical Description

SIGGLESTHORNE is a parish, township and pleasant, well-built village, with a station on the Hull and Hornsea branch of the North Eastern railway, locally in the township of Hatfield and 3 miles south-south-east; it is 4 miles west-south-west from Hornsea, 13 north-east from Hull, 10 north-east-by-east from Beverley and 12 south-west from Driffield, in the Holderness division of the Riding, north division of the wapen-take of Holderness, North Holderness petty sessional division, Skirlaugh union, county court district of Beverley, rural deanery of Hornsea, archdeaconry of the East Riding and diocese of York. The church of St. Lawrence is a building of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and a massive embattled western tower containing 3 bells: the east window was filled with stained glass at the expense of the Ven. William Harry Edward Bentinck, rector here from 1808 and canon of Westminster, who also, in 1838, presented the church with a service of communion plate: in the chancel are several inscriptions to the Constable family and others and a monument to John Garnett, Bishop of Ferns and Leighlin (1744-52), and of Clogher in 1758, who died in 1782: on the south wall of the tower is fixed a Sun.-dial, dated 1813: portions of a monumental slab and fragments of tracery belonging to a chantry chapel, now destroyed, have been recovered from the churchyard, in which now stands an ancient stone altar: in 1906 a screen enclosing the choir vestry was erected as a memorial to the Rev. William Dunkerley, rector 1885-98, and a carved oak pulpit provided at a cost of about £80. in memory of the late Rev. George Strickland Marriott B.A. rector 1899 to 1905: the church was repaired and reseated in 1848 at a cost of about £1,000, one third of which was defrayed by the Ven. W. H. E. Bentinck: there are 350 sittings. The register dates from the year 1562. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £625, including 117 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Crown, and held since 1905 by the Rev. Hugh Beaumont Jones, of Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge. The poor have the interest arising from £400, invested in stocks by the late M. T, Gibson esq. the rector and churchwardens for the time being acting as trustees. Sigglesthorne Hall, the seat of Captain George Richard Bethell R.N., J.P. is a mansion, standing near the church, in gardens and shrubberies, which have been tastefully laid out and are surrounded by some fine timber. William Bethell esq. J.P. of Rise Park, and Major F, C. Strickland-Constable J.P. of Wassand Hall, who are joint lords of the manor, are the chief landowners. The soil is loamy and clayey; the subsoil, principally clay. The chief crops are wheat, oats, barley, beans, seeds and turnips. The acreage of the township is 1,031; rateable value, £1,478; the population in 1911 was: township, 216; parish, 735.

Public Elementary School, Seaton (infants), built in 1840, by the Ven. Archdeacon Bentinck, a former rector, who also left £600 towards the support of this school & £100 for the repairs of this & the girls’ school at Sigglesthorne; the school has a further endowment of £300, left by the late Marmaduke Constable esq. of Wassand, & will hold 52 children; average attendance, 36.

The elder children attend school at Sigglesthorne.

Public Elementary (Endowed) School (mixed), built in-1867 & a master’s residence in 1861, at the sole cost of the Ven. Archdeacon Bentinck, who partially endowed it with the sum of £1,700, invested in Consols; a class room was enlarged in 1894, & the school will now hold 110 children; average attendance, 89.
