Historical Description

SILKSTONE is a township, populous village, railway station, and extensive parish and polling place for the Southern division of the Hiding, in the upper division of Staincross wapentake, petty sessional division of Barnsley, union of Penistone, county court district of Barnsley, rural deanery of Silkstone, archdeaconry of Craven and diocese of Ripon, 4 miles west from Barnsley, 177 from London, 16 ½ north-west from Sheffield, 31 ¼ from Manchester, 20 from Doncaster and 4 north-east from Penistone. The parish of Silkstone comprises the townships of Barnsley, Cumberworth. Dodworth. Hoyland Swaine, Silkstone, stain borough, Thurgoland and West Bretton. The village, comprising one long street, lies in a valley through which flows a tributary of the Dearne.

About half a mile from the village is a station on a branch of the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire railway, which passes through the parish from Penistone and forms a junction with the south Yorkshire line at Barnsley. The church of All Saints is an ancient cruciform structure of stone in the Gothic style, consisting of chancel with two chapels, nave and aisles and square embattled tower containing 6 bells, dating from 1626: the church contains brasses to Matthew Wentworth. of Bretton Hall (1639), Francis Morton (1732), Matthew Batterworth (1775) and Mary, wife of Rev. Joseph Purslove (1754), and a marble monument, erected in 1675, to Thomas Wentworth. a faithful follower of Charles I. and his wife, ancestors of the family of Beaumont of West Bretton; at the east end is a stained window to the memory of Robert Couldwell Clarke (1843), and another on the north side to Robert C. Clarke (1874): in the churchyard is a monument recording the names of twenty-six persons, who met their death July 4th. 1838, by a sudden irruption of water in one of the pits belonging: to R. C. Clarke esq. The register dates from the year 1540, and is in good condition. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £270 with residence and 52 acres of glebe land, in the gift of the Bishop of Ripon and held by the Rev, William Stafford Barker M.A. of Clare College, Cambridge There are chapels belonging to the Wesleyan Reform and Primitive Methodists, both rebuilt in 1877. Some small charities are distributed among the poor. Coal of excellent quality abounds in the parish, and there are many extensive collieries. Thomas Ownsworth. David Johnson and the trustees of the late R.C. Clarke are lords of the manor. Noblethorpe Hall, the seat of Mrs. Clarke, is a handsome rectangular building of stone, with a Grecian portico, and stands in a park of 52 acres. The principal landowners are W, T. W. Spencer-Stanhope esq. J.P. and the trustees of the late R. C. Clarke esq. The soil is clay and loam; subsoil, sandstone. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. The area of the township is 1,497 acres; rateable value, £6,451; and the population in 1871 was 1,291; the area of the parish is 13,598 acres, and the population in 1861 was 25,288; in 1871, 31,354.
