Historical Description

SILSDEN is a village, township and ecclesiastical parish formed in 1846 from the parish of Kildwick, and a polling place for the Northern division of the Riding, in the union and county court district of Skipton, wapentake and liberty of Staincliffe, rural deanery of South Craven, archdeaconry of Craven and diocese of Ripon, situated in a valley 4 miles north of Keighley and 1 mile from Steeton station, on the other side of the Aire, here crossed by a bridge; the Leeds and Liverpool canal passes through the township. The church of St. James, built in 1711, enlarged in 1816, and restored and further enlarged in 1876 at a cost of £2,000, raised by subscription, is a stone building in the Geometrical style, consisting of chancel, nave, porch, and tower with 1 bell; it contains an organ and west gallery, and will seat 500 persons. The baptismal and burial registers date from 1768; those of marriages from 1845. The living is a perpetual curacy, yearly value £140 with residence, in the gift of Sir Henry James Tufton bart. and held by the Rev. Francis Knowles M.A. of St. Catharine’s College, Cambridge. A school Board was formed here in 1874 and consists of five members. There are chapels for Wesleyans, Primitive Methodists and Methodist Free Church. Sir Henry J. Tufton gave an acre of ground to be used for burial purposes in 1877, half of which is consecrated. A Local Board of Health. consisting of 12 members, was constituted in 1863. Sir Henry J. Tufton bart. is lord of the manor, and owner of nearly all the land. The soil is clay in Silsden Moor, and lighter soil in the lower parts; subsoil, rock, clay and gravel. The land is mostly in pasture. The area is 7,060 acres; rateable value, £9,819 15s.; and the population in 1871 was 2,714. The area of the ecclesiastical parish is 43 acres.
