Historical Description
SINNINGTON is a parish, township and village on the road from Pickering to Kirby Moorside, and on the river seven, with a station on the Gilling and Pickering branch of the North Eastern railway, 4 miles west from Pickering, 4 east from Kirby Moorside and 12 north-by-west from Malton, in the Whitby division of the Riding, Malton county court district, Pickering Lythe wapentake, petty sessional division of Pickering Lythe West, Pickering union, rural deanery of Helmsley, archdeaconry of Cleveland and diocese of York. The church of All Saints, standing on hilly ground north-east of the village, is a small and plain edifice of stone, originally Norman, and consisting of chancel, nave, vestry, south porch and a bell turret, with spire, containing 3 bells, one of which bears the invocation “Sancte Petre ora pro nobis”: one of the bells was re-cast and a new one was added in 1904: the fabric had been extensively modernised in a very debased manner, but in 1904 was very carefully restored, at a cost of about £1,400, under the direction of Mr. C. Hodgson Fowler F.R.I.B.A, of Durham: the roofs, which had become much dilapidated, have been renewed, one 15th century principal being retained: the chancel arch has been rebuilt, the original stones having been found built up in two columns in the eastern angles of the nave: a new vestry and heating chamber have been added, and a stained east window has been presented by the Cussons family: there are no windows on the north side, those on the south, square and large, were found to have over them the arches of small windows of Norman date: the south doorway, erected about 1180, has over it a very early carving of a man on horseback, and there are remains of three other doorways: in the nave a stone coffin was found, still containing human remains: the interior is partly seated with pews of Elizabethan or Jacobean date, in part carved: built into the exterior walls are a number of fragments of very early carved work: the south wall contains two heads of Saxon crosses, one covered with bold scroll moulding and interlaced work; the other bearing a rude figure of Our Lord with extended arms, and traces of a corona over the head, and of a dragon or serpent below the arms: at the east end are two other bits of carving, and on the north side, now forming part of a window jamb, is part of the head of a coffin slab of later date, and in the wall are many other Saxon remnants, one exhibiting bold interlaced ornament: the church affords 120 sittings: the churchyard, over shadowed by trees on the north and east, surrounds the church on all sides. The register dates from the year 1597. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £140, including 53 acres of glebe, with residence, near the church, in the gift of Mrs. Kendall, and held since 1900 by the Rev. James Frederick Monckton. Close to the church, on the north-east and standing north and south, is a large rectangular building of the Early English period, with inserted Perpendicular windows, that at the south end, now blocked, being unusually large: the interior, used as a barn, contains the frame work of an oak screen, still in situ, and portions of richly moulded Norman zig-zag work are built into the walls of the adjoining farm buildings. On the Green, in the centre of the village, is the school, a good modern structure in the Early Gothic style, with a spired bell turret on the ridge; near it stands the maypole, a tall spar about 70 feet in height, and a little farther off a village pump: on the west side of the green flows the river seven, over which there is a good stone bridge, restored in 1896 by order of the County Council; the general appearance of the village from this point is exceedingly picturesque. There is a Wesleyan chapel, and also a Free Library, consisting of several hundred volumes. There are eight almshouses in Thornton for old people of this parish; in addition to the house they are allowed about 4s. 9d. weekly each and a chaldron of coals yearly, left by Lady Elizabeth Lumley. Charles Booth Elmsall Wright esq. of Bolton Hall, West Yorks, who is lord of the manor, and the trustees of the late Rev. William Kendall are the chief landowners. The soil is strong clay chiefly; the subsoil is limestone rock. The chief crops are wheat, oats and barley. The acreage of the township is 2,155 of land and 21 of water; rateable value, £2,749; the population in 1911 was 321 in the township and 482 in the parish.
Public Elementary school (mixed), for 60 children; average attendance, 40.
