Historical Description

SKELTON is a parish, in a vale near the river Ouse, 2 miles south-east from Beningbrough station on the main line of the North Eastern railway, 4 miles north-west from York and 9 south from Easingwold, in the Thirsk and Malton division of the Riding, Bulmer wapentake, petty sessional division of Bulmer East. York union and county court district, rural deanery of Easingwold, archdeaconry of Cleveland and diocese of York. By an order in Council, obtained in 1877, the boundaries of the township (a great portion of which was up to that time in the parish of Overton) were re-adjusted, and are now, with one or two exceptions, co-terminous with the parish boundaries. The limits of the ecclesiastical parish were re-adjusted in 1870 by an Order in Council. The church of All Saints, standing an rising ground at the northern extremity of the village, is an ancient edifice in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, with north and south chapels, nave, aisles, south porch and a belfry containing 2 bells: it was dedicated to All Saints, though it is usually called St. Giles, from a tradition still prevalent in the parish that it was built with the stones that remained after the south transept of York Minster (commenced A.D. 1227, during the archiepiscopate of Walter de Grey) was finished; that the church was completed before 1247 appears by an extract from Archbishop de Grey’s Toll, as follows:-“Confirmation of a donation to the chapel of Skelton. To all, etc. The donation which our beloved son in Christ, Maister E. Hagitur, Treasurer of York, made to John de l’Edes, Clerk of the chapel at Skelton, considering it to be agreeable and satisfactory to us, we confirm the same by our Pontifical authority, desiring the said Treasurer and his successors to pay annually the sum of 20d. to this person. In witness whereof, etc. etc. Dated at Thorp on the 6th day of the Ides of December A.D. 1247, in the subscribed year of our Pontificate”: the chancel retains a piscina, and there is one in each of the chapels: in the vestry lies an ancient stone, formerly on the floor of the sacrarium, and inscribed to Philip Lovell, ob. 24th July, and Anne his wife, ob. 25th March, 1421: there are 130 sittings. The register dates from the year 1538, and contains the following record “This Charge to Register the names was first given in the 30th year of Henry VIII. A.D. 1538, in the Lord Abbot’s visitation, holden at Byland. Joseph Darley, then Parson of Skelton, Oct. 27, 1538.” The living is a rectory, net yearly value £221, with residence and including 24 acres of glebe, in the gift of Major E. W. Gresham Williams-Hepworth, and held since 1909 by the Rev. Harry Archibald Williams M.A. of St. John’s College, Cambridge. Skelton Hall, the property of Capt. Battye, and now occupied by Mrs. Bindloss, is a mansion, standing in tastefully laid-out grounds and surrounded by a well-wooded park; in the grounds are some very fine chestnut trees. Skelton Manor House, the property of Major E. W. G. Williams-Hepworth, and the residence of the Rev. Harry A. Williams M.A. was built in the time of the Stuarts, and contains some very fine old oak carvings. Fairfield House, the property of Robert Charles De Grey Vyner esq. of Tupholme Hall, Horncastle, is pleasantly situated on the York road, about half a mile from the village, but is now (1913) unoccupied. Skelton Grange, the seat of Capt. Edward Herbert Place, is a modern mansion, pleasantly situated in a small park near the entrance to the village. Major E. W. G. Williams-Hepworth, of Midford Castle, near Bath, is lord of the manor. The chief landowners are Capt. Edward Herbert Place, Capt. Battye and E. G. Tew esq. The soil is a clay loam; subsoil, gravel and sand. The chief crops are oats, but largely meadow and pasture. The area is 2,463 acres of land and 10 of water; rateable value, £3,277; the population in 1911 was 292 in the civil, and 254 in the ecclesiastical parish.

There is a reading room & library in connection with the school.
