Historical Description

SKELTON is a village and township forming, with Newby, Mulwith and Givendale, an ecclesiastical parish in the Northern division of the Riding, liberty, county court district, archdeaconry of Richmond, rural deanery and diocese of Ripon, union of Great Ouseburn, 2 ½ miles west-north-west from Boroughbridge and 4 from Ripon. The chapel of St. Helen, erected on the site of a more ancient one in the year 1811, is built of stone, and was partially dismantled in 1876 and converted into a mortuary chapel; the interior has a marble tablet, in memory of the Rev. Isaac Crakelt, incumbent in 1833: at the west end is an open turret containing 1 bell. The earliest register dates from the year 1811. The living is a vicarage known as Skelton-with-Newby, yearly value nearly £300 with residence, in the gift of Lady Mary Vyner and held by the Rev. Charles Lester M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge. A new church, dedicated to “Christ the Consoler,” and consisting of chancel, nave and aisles, from the designs of Mr. Burgess, has been erected as a memorial of the late Frederick Grantham Vyner (the youngest son of Lady Mary Vyner, the foundress), who was murdered by Greek brigands in May, 1870; it is highly decorated, and the chancel is divided from the nave by a solid marble screen with gates of brass; over the chancel arch are elaborate sculptures of Our Lord and the Apostles; the reredos of alabaster is very handsome; the massive font is of white marble, adorned with painted figures in alabaster representing the baptism of our Lord, and is surmounted by a Gothic canopy of English walnut; the windows are all stained, and are memorial to different members of Lady Mary Vyner’s family. The principal landowners are Lady Mary Vyner, Mr. Plews, Mr. Mason and Mr. Yeates. The chief crops are corn and grass. The soil is clay; subsoil, gravel. The area is 926 acres; rateable value, £2,108; the population of Skelton township in 1871, 287; and of the ecclesiastical district comprising Skelton, Givendale and Newby, called “Skelton-cum-Newby,” 390.

The National (mixed) school, is supported by Lady Mary Vyner; Thomas Lewis Crown, master; Mrs. Crown, mistress.
