Historical Description

SKIDBY is a parish, township and village, near the Hull and Beverley road, 2 ½ miles north-east from Little Weighton station on the Hull, Barnsley and West Riding junction railway, 3 west from Cottingham station on the Hull and Beverley section of the North Eastern railway and about 4 south from Beverley; it is in the Howdenshire division of the Riding, Hunsley Beacon division of Harthill wapentake, South Hunsley Beacon petty sessional division, Beverley union and county court district, rural deanery of Kingston-upon-Hull, archdeaconry of the East Riding and diocese of York. The church of St. Michael is an ancient structure of brick and stone, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and a western embattled tower with pinnacles containing one bell: the tower was built in 1836: the church was restored in 1896, at a cost of £100: the floor of the church was raised some 2 ½ feet, and during the work traces were found of a lady chapel with a piscina and credence table: there are 200 sittings.

The register dates (legibly) from about the year 1654; the earliest pages are illegible. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £240, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Chester, and held since 1909 by the Rev. David Saunders Bowen, of St. David’s College, Lampeter. A Wesleyan chapel was opened here October 25, 1902, and will seat 150 persons. The Reading and Recreation room was opened in 1905. At Skidby Ings some interesting discoveries have been made, stone coffins and human remains have been unearthed; near the same spot two gold bracelets of beautiful design and workmanship were found, and are now in the British Museum. The Master and Fellows of Trinity College. Cambridge, who are lords of the manor, Mrs. Rigg and Arthur Stanley Wilson esq. M.P., J.P. of Raywell Hall, are the principal landowners. The soil is loam; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. The area is 1,184 acres; rateable value, £2,250; the population in 1911 was 296.

Skidby Carr, by a Local Government Board Order, dated December 5th, 1879, has been amalgamated with Cottinsrham.
