Historical Description

SKIPWITH is a parish, township and village, with a station half a mile distant on the Derwent Valley light railway. The parish is 3 miles east from Riccall station on the Doncaster extension of the main line of the North Eastern railway, 5 ½ north-east from Selby and 10 from York, in the Howdenshire division of the Riding, peculiar liberty of Howdenshire, Ouse and Derwent wapentake and petty sessional division, Selby union and county court district, rural deanery of Escrick, archdeaconry of the East Riding and diocese of York. The church of St. Helen is a building of stone in the Early Norman, Transition and later styles, consisting of chancel, clerestoried nave, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower containing 3 bells; the east window, Early Perpendicular, has a bracket, on either side, and retains some fragments ancient glass: the two westernmost, bays of the nave are Transitional, the arches having zigzag moulding and other ornamental work of later character: the piers are octagonal: there is also a south porch with a Norman doorway: a screen of fine open work, an alms-box dated 1615, and several mural monuments to the Toulson and Parker families: the coping stones of the churchyard wall are old stone coffin-lids: in the tower is a stone with Early carvings, supposed to represent a boar-hunt: the church was entirely restored in 1877, at a cost of £2,500, and affords about 250 sittings. The register dates from the year 1570. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £208, including 160 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and held since 1911 by the Rev. Herbert Hyde Shaw M.A, of Keble College, Oxford. The impropriate tithe of the township amounts to £114. There is a Primitive Methodist chapel, built in 1868. On the common are hills and mounds known as” the Dane hills.” Skipwith Hall is a brick mansion of the Queen Anne period, and overlooks the common Hon. Irene Constance Lawley is lady of the manor and the principal landowner. Nearly half the parish is moorland; subsoil, clay and sand. The chief crops are potatoes, rye, roots and oats. The area is 2,629 acres of land and 17 of water; rateable value, £2,514; the population in 1911 was-township, 255; parish, 555.
