Historical Description

SLAIDBURN is a parish, township and village, and a polling place for the Northern division of the Riding, 9 miles north from Clitheroe, 13 south-west from Settle, 20 south-east from Lancaster, in the west division of Staincliife and Ewcross wapentake, Clitheroe union and county court district and petty sessional division, rural deanery of West Craven, archdeaconry of Craven, diocese of Ripon and province of York, and is situated on the river Hodder. The church of St. Andrew, built in 1265, is a stone building in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, transept, and low square tower with 6 bells, dating from 1843: a very handsome reredos and communion rails were presented in 1875 by Mrs. Birchall of Whiteholme; there is a beautiful screen of black oak, and in the chancel a stained window; the font is ancient, but plain; a splendid organ has lately been presented to the church by the patron of the living, William Wilkinson esq. in memory of his brother, the late Leonard Wilkinson esq. at a cost of £800. The registers date from the year 1653 and are much worn, but copies of them were very carefully made some years since. The living is a rectory, tithes commuted at £513, with residence and about 8 acres of glebe, in the gift of William Wilkinson esq. and held by the Rev. Richard Lewis Jones. The Wesleyans have a chapel here. The charities are of £30 yearly value, besides the rent of 50 acres of poor’s land amounting to £79 10s. yearly. Here is a savings bank. Fairs are held on the Wednesday previous to Easter Sunday, and on the 4th November, yearly, for cattle. Colonel John Towneley’s trustees are lords of the manor; William Wilkinson esq. and Mrs. Birchall are chief landowners. The soil is lime; the subsoil is limestone. The chief crops are hay and pasture. The area is 5,182 acres; rateable value, £4,625; population in 1871, 590; the area of the entire parish was, before Dale Head was made a separate parish, 40,000 acres; population in 1871, 1,615.

The Grammar school, Slaidburn, now incorporated with the boys’ National school, has an endowment of £80 yearly; Thomas Mudd, master.
