Historical Description
SLAITHWAITE is a considerable village, situated in the townships of Slaithwaite Lingards, Linthwaite and Golcar and, with the township of Lingards, constitutes an ecclesiastical parish, called Slaithwaite-cum-Lingards, formed from the parishes of Almondbury and Huddersfield; it is a polling place for the Southern division of the Riding, in the union, petty sessional division and county court district of Huddersfield, upper division of Agbrigg wapentake, rural deanery of Huddersfield, archdeaconry of Craven and diocese of Ripon, 5 miles west-by-south from Huddersfield. The river Colne, the Huddersfield and Manchester canal, and the Leeds and Manchester section of the London and North Western railway pass through the township, the latter having a station here. Slaithwaite with Lingards townships are governed by a Local Board of Health of 12 members. The church of St. James is a large plain stone Gothic building, consisting of chancel, nave, and tower containing 1 bell; the cancel was rebuilt in 1856 by the Earl of Dartmouth. the impropriator. The register, which is in good condition, dates from the year 1685. The “Annals of the Church in Slaithwaite from 1593 to 1863” were published by the Rev. Canon Hulbert, late incumbent. The living is a perpetual curacy, yearly value £192, in the gift of the vicar of Huddersfield, and held by the Rev. Henry Harold Rose M.A. of Corpus Christi college, Cambridge. An Endowed school was founded by the Rev. Robert Meeke, in the year 1721, and is now called Meeke and Walker’s Educational Institution. There is a Baptist chapel and a United Methodist Free Church. The mineral baths, surrounded by beautiful gardens and romantic scenery, are in great repute, and much frequented in the summer season. The woollen manufacture (fancy and unions) and cotton spinning is carried on here; there are also several stone quarries in the neighbourhood. Between Golcar and Slaithwaite is a railway viaduct of 19 arches, and one of 18 arches in that part of the township which connects Holmside and Sunside. The Manor House, or Old Hall, is a stone building in the Elizabethan style, and is used only for the receipt of rents of the estate of the Earl of Dartmouth, a court baron being held annually in October. Slaithwaite Hall, a hamlet at the extremity of the township, contains some remains of an ancient residence of the lords of the manor. Gas works have been erected. A cattle fair is held here every alternate Monday. A branch of the Midland Banking Company Limited is open every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10 to 2.45. The Earl of Dartmouth is lord of the manor and sole landed proprietor. The soil is clay on stone. The chief crops are grass and oats. The area of the township is 2,436 acres; of the ecclesiastical parish, 698 acres; rateable value, £10,735; the population in 1871 was of the township 2,781; and of ecclesiastical parish, 825.
