The church of St. Mary, which stands in Sledmere Park, is a building of stone, consisting of chancel, nave and a western tower containing 3 bells: the 14th century tower is the only remaining portion of the pre-Reformation structure, the nave and chancel having been removed in 1756 by Richard Sykes esq. in order to erect the late edifice, a plain example of the Classic style of the 18th century, restored, after 1873, at a cost of £1,500, but entirely rebuilt, with the exception of the tower, in 1897-8, at the sole cost of Sir Tatton Sykes bart.: it is now a stately edifice in the Gothic style, from designs by Mr. Temple Moore, architect, and consists of chancel, with vestry, nave, aisles and south porch, with the old western tower, which has been renovated: both chancel and nave are seated in oak and the former is enclosed by a screen and has a triptych reredos: all the windows in the chancel, aisles, tower and porch are stained and the east wrindow exhibits the Tree of Jesse: in the church is a memorial to Thomas Wilson esq. attorney to the Great Council of the North, established at York after suppression of the “Pilgrimage of Grace” insurrection in 1537; he died in 1641: there are also mural tablets to the Sykes, Rouse, Egerton and Kirkby families and a coped tomb of granite to the late Sir Tatton Sykes bart. the celebrated sportsman and agriculturist, who died 21st March, 1863: the church affords 200 sittings. The register dates from the year 1705. The Estate Office, with dwelling-house attached, completed in 1896, is a find building of brick and Whitby stone dressings in the Domestic Tudor style, from designs by the late Mr. John Birch, architect, of the Adelphi, London, who also designed the Foresters’ house, the residence for the clerk of the works and the Post office. The village has also been much improved by the making of kerbed footpaths throughout. Sledmere House, erected towards the end of the 18th century by Sir Christopher Sykes bart. a large mansion of stone in the Italian style, containing many spacious apartments, singularly well-proportioned and admirably decorated, was burnt down in 1911; among the paintings in the house which were saved was a “Pieta,” by Pietro Perugino, and a graceful portrait of Romney; there is also a fine equestrian portrait by Sir F. Grant P.R.A. of the late Sir Tatton Sykes bart.: a new house is now (1913) in course of erection: the park comprises about 220 acres, and opposite the entrance gates is a circular building, with a lead-covered dome, supported by eight columns, and containing a deep well of good water, to which the inhabitants of the village have access. An inscription recording its erection in 1840 by Sir Tatton Sykes bart. in memory of his father, was formerly on the well, but has now been transferred to a pier on the wall facing it.
