Historical Description

SNAINTON is a village, township and parochial chapelry, 1 ½ miles west from Brompton, on the road from Scarborough to Pickering, with a station on the Pickering and Seamer branch railway, 9 ½ south-west from Scarborough. The chapel of St. Stephen is a plain building of stone, consisting of chancel and nave and a turret containing one bell: in front of the chapel is a handsome Norman archway, which, together with the font recently restored to its original use, form the only relics of the Norman church formerly occupying the site of the present edifice, which affords 150 sittings. There are also Primitive Methodist and Wesleyan chapels. Wydale, the residence of Harry H. Illingworth esq. is a modern mansion of stone, pleasantly situated, and about 1905 was considerably enlarged and altered in a simple Renaissance style and exterior balconies added, from designs by Mr. S. D. Kitson, architect. The King, who, as Duke of Lancaster, is lord of the manor, and Hugh Cayley esq. are the principal landowners. The area is 4,828 acres of land, including marsh land and 9 of water; rateable value, £6,031; the population in 1911 was 649. By a Local Government Board Order which came into operation March 25, 1886, the portion of Snainton township formerly in Ebberston parish was amalgamated with Snainton.

Public Elementary school (mixed), erected in 1892, with master’s residence (added in 1895), for 180 children; average attendance, 90.
