The church is a handsome ancient structure, dedicated to St. Laurence, in which are interred, in the family vault, all the ancestors of the noble family of Lord Viscount Downe, who has a seat at Cowick, a large village, about half a mile southeast from Snaith, near the confluence of the Don and Aire. At the west end of the town stands an old hall, formerly the residence of the Yarboroughs. The market is on Thursday.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

SNAITH is a small market town, extensive parish, and polling place for the Eastern division of the Riding, comprising the townships of Cowick, Great and Little Heck (forming one township), Gowdall, and Polliigton: and is a station on the Lancashire and Yorkshire (Wakefield, Pontefract & Goole) railway, 7 miles west from Goole, 8 south from Selby, 9 north from Thorne, and 180 from London, situate on the Southern bank of the river Aire, in the lower division of the wapentake of Osgoldcross, union and country court district of Goole, archdeaconry and diocese of York, and rural deanery of Snaith. The town is lighted with gas, and there are several very good residences in the town and vicinity. The market day is Thursday. Two fairs for cattle are held-one on the last Thursday in April and the other on August 10th. Petty sessions are held on the last Thursday of every month at the Court House, and every Wednesday at Goole. The York City and County Bank and Leeds and County Bank transact business on Thursdays. The church of St. Lawrence, erected about 1,100, is a large and ancient stone buildiug, in the Later English style, consisting of chancel, nave, transepts, aisles and two mortuary chapels, belonging respectively to Lord Beaumont and Viscount Downe, with a handsome square tower containing clock and peal of 6 bells, dating from 1760: in the interior is a colossal marble statue of Viscount Downe, who died in 1832, and a line marble bust of Lady Elizabeth Stapleton; there are also two stained windows, one to the late vicar (the Rev. H. T. Rees), and the other to the late Dr. Hodgson: the church was thoroughly repaired in 1868, at a post of about £5,000, defrayed by subscription. The parish register dates from the year 1537. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £700, in the gift of the trustees of the late George John Yarburgh esq. and held by the Rev. Charles Edward Storrs. The Wesleyan chapel, erected in 1862, at a cost of £2,600, is a large and handsome building, and will seat 800 persons. There is a school adjoining, with an average daily attendance of over 100. The almshouses maintain six poor widows. There are charities amounting to about £22 yearly, for distribution in the township of Snaith. Benjamin Shaw esq. J.P. is lord of the manor. George William Bateson De Yarburgh esq. and the trustees of the late Thomas Shearburn esq. J.P. are the principal landowners. The soil is of a sandy nature; subsoil, clay and peat. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats, potatoes and flax. The area of the township is 5,862 acres; rateable value of Snaith and Cowick £10,199; population in 1871, 1,863; the area of the entire parish is 31,143 acres; population in 1871, 14,644, which includes the town of Goole.
