SOUTH CAVE is a township, parish and small market town, 1 mile south from South Cave station on the Hull and Barnsley railway, 3 north from Brough station on the. Hull and Selby section of the North Eastern railway, 12 west-by-north from Hull and g south-west from Beverley, in the Howdenshire division of the Ridiag, Hunsley Beacon division of Harthill wapentake, petty sessional division of South Hunsley Beacon, Beverley union and county court district, rural deanery of Howden, archdeaconry of the East Riding and diocese of York. The ancient parish church of All Saints, destroyed by fire and rebuilt in 1601, consists of chancel, nave, north aisle, south transept, south porch and an embattled western tower with eight pinnacles, containing 3 bells: the chancel arch and the arch of the Faxfleet aisle are considered to be of the 13th century; the font of this period is preserved, but disused, a new one having been presented by the Misses Burland, in memory of theft father: three of the windows are stained, and in the north aisle are several tombs to the Harrison family, dated 1682: the chancel was rebuilt in 1847, at the expense of the late H. Gee Barnard; and in 1860 the whole church was restored, and now affords 320 sittings. The register dates from the year 1558, but is deficient from 1627 to 1634 and from 1657 to 1670. The living is at vicarage, net yearly value £170, with 42 ½ acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Church Pastoral Aid Society, and held since 1906 by the Rev. Clifford Haworth Daniel M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge. There is a Wesleyan chapel, built in 1816, a Congregational chapel, built in 1877, but first erected in 1662, and a Primitive Methodist chapel. The cemetery was formed in 1873 from 1 acre and 1 rood of ground, given by the late C. E. G. Barnard esq. and has a mortuary chapel; the whole is consecrated, and is under the control of the vicar and churchwardens; at the entrance is a lych gate. Monday is the market day, but the market has fallen into disuse. Fairs are held on Trinity Monday for cattle, sheep and horses, a pleasure fair on Trinity Tuesday, and other fairs the second Monday after Michaelmas and Candlemas days for cattle only. The charities include Jobson’s dole, given by Mr. Samuel Jobson, who died in 1697, and by his will left a gift of cottage and lands for the vicar and poor of this parish; this charity is now in the hands of the Charity Commissioners and amounts to over £3,000, invested in Corporation Stock, the interest being distributed quarterly by a body of trustees: the late Mrs. Barnard left £1,000, the interest to be distributed yearly between six of the most deserving widows and single women in the parish. Cave Castle, the seat of Miss Barnard, is a spacious turreted mansion of white brick, erected on the site of an ancient fortress, and stands in a finely timbered park; the grounds, which were laid out in 1787, are kept in fine order. Miss Barnard, who is lady of the manor, Henry Broadley Harrison-Broadley esq. M.P. of Welton House, and the trustees of the late G. G. MacTurk esq. are the principal landowners. The soil is clay, sand and loam; subsoil, various. The chief crops are wheat, beans, potatoes and oats. The area of the township is 4,329 acres of land, 3 of water, 85 of tidal water and 121 of foreshore; rateable value, £10,068; the population in 1911 was 956 in the civil and 942 in the ecclesiastical parish.
