North Cowton History

NORTH COWTON is a township in Richmond union and county court district. Here is a station, called Moulton, on the Richmond branch of the North Eastern railway, half a mile west from the village, 7 ½ miles east-north-east from Richmond and 7 ½ south from Darlington. The chapel of ease here is an iron building, erected by subscription in 1894, and will seat about 150. There is also a small Wesleyan chapel. Mrs. Carpenter Turnor, is lady of the manor; the Marquess of Zetland K.T., P.C. is the chief landowner. The soil and subsoil are clay. The chief crops are wheat, oats, barley and beans. The township contains 1,396 acres; rateable value, £1,892; the population in 1911 was 259.
