Historical Description

SOUTH CROSLAND is a township, small village and ecclesiastical parish, formed in 1843 out of the parish of Almondbury, 4 miles south-west from it, and 3 ¼ south-south-west from Huddersfield, in the southern division of the Riding, upper division of Agbrigg wapentake, Huddersfield union, county court district and rural deanery, archdeaconry of Craven, diocese of Ripon. The Meltham branch railway passes through a tunnel and has a station at Netherton. The township is governed by a Local Board of Health of 9 members. The church of the Holy Trinity is a stone edifice in the Early Pointed style, consisting of nave and aisles, with a square tower containing 1 bell: a stained window has been placed in the church at a cost of £300, principally defrayed by the parishioners. The register dates from the year 1829. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £250 with residence, in the gift of the vicar of Almomdhury, and held by the Rev. George Coulton of St. Aidan’s college, Birkenhead. Here are some large quarries and abundance of excellent building and flag stones. Henry Frederick Beaumont esq. is lord of the manor and principal landowner. The soil is strong clay; subsoil sandstone. The chief crops are oats, potatoes, turnips and grass. The township contains 1,834 acres; the ecclesiastical parish, 1,708; rateable value £10,531; and the population (1871) 2,900, including Netherton. The population of the township in 1871, including Netherton, was 2,863; of the ecclesiastical parish 2,353.

Netherton is a large village in the township of south Crosland, half a mile east, with a station on the Huddersfield and Meltham branch of the Lancashire and Yorkshire railway. Here is a place of worship for Wesleyans, a Mechanics’ Institution and Odd Fellows’ Hall. The area is 1,708 acres, and the population is included in the township of south Crosland.
