Historical Description

SOUTH KILVINGTON is a parish, township and pleasant village, on the high Road leading from Yarm to Thirsk, 1 mile north from Thirsk, 2 ½ north-east from Thirsk station on the main line of the North Eastern railway, 24 north-north-west from York and 8 south-south-east from Northallerton, in the Thirsk and Malton division of the Riding, wapentake and petty sessional division of Birdforth, Thirsk union and county court district, rural deanery of Thirsk, archdeaconry of Cleveland and diocese of York. The church of St. Wilfrid is an ancient building of stone, chiefly in the Early Decorated style, but with some earlier portions, and consists of chancel, nave, south porch and a wooden belfry containing 2 bells: the font is ancient, and bears the arms of the Scropes, formerly of Upsall Castle, with the inscription “Thomas le Scrope et Elizabeth uxor ejus,” referring to Thomas, 6th Baron Scrope, of Masham and Upsall, ob. 1494, and his wife Elizabeth (daughter and co-heir of John Nevil, Marquess of Montacute), ob. 1501: the church was restored in 1876, at a cost of £1,000, and affords 120 sittings. The register dates from the year 1572 and contains an entry, in 1866, relating to Matthew Carter, of Quornden House, Thornborough, who died at the age of 112. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £421, including 98 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, and held since 1859 by the Rev. Wm. Towler Kingsley B.D. formerly of St. John’s College, Cambridge, and afterwards fellow and tutor of Sidney Sussex College. E. R. Turton esq. D.L., J.P. who is lord of the manor, George Stafford Thompson esq. of New Building, Kirby Knowle, and W. Allison esq. are the principal landowners. The chief crops are wheat, barley, turnips and pasturage. The soil is loamy; subsoil, clay and gravel. The area is 1,080 acres of land and 3 of water in the township; rateable value, £1,618; the population in 1911 was 232 in the township and 367 in the ecclesiastical parish.
