Thornbrough History
THORNBROUGH, formerly called “Hundulthorpe,” is a township in the parish of south Kilvington, 2 ½ miles north-north-east from Thirsk. Edmund R. Turton esq. of Upsall Castle, is lord of the manor and principal landowner. This place formerly belonged to Mr. Walker, who made a fortune in the pre-railway times by keeping relays of fast cobs on the North road, with the object of supplying early information to newspapers; it had previously belonged to the Saltmarshe family There is no village or church. The area is 562 acres; rateable value, £505; the population in 1901 was 16.
