Historical Description

SOWERBY is a parish, with a considerable village, extending one mile south from Thirsk, to which it forms a suburb, in the Thirsk and Malton division of the Riding, and in the wapentake and petty sessional division of Birdforth, county court district and union of Thirsk, rural deanery of Thirsk, archdeaconry of Cleveland and diocese of York. The church of St. Oswald is a cruciform building of stone in the Norman style, consisting of chancel, nave, transepts, north aisle and a western tower with pinnacles containing 4 bells: it has some stained windows, and in 1907 a new organ was provided at a cost of £475: the church was restored in 1840 and again in 1879—83, under the direction of Mr. J. H. Fowler, when it was reseated in oak, a new reredos erected, a lantern built at the intersection of the nave and chancel and other improvements carried out at a cost of £1,485: there are 350 sittings. The register dates from the year 1569. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £247, with 8 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Archbishop of York, and held since 1910 by the Rev. Charles Ormerod Stewart B.A. of London University. The churchyard was enlarged by the addition of three-quarters of an acre in 1912. The great tithes, value £450, are held by the Ecclesiastical Commissioners. Here is a Wesleyan chapel. The local charities include a benefaction by John Dinmore, in 1692, for giving coal to the poor and others; by John Wright, in 1721, for the maintenance of a service in the church on Wednesdays and Fridays; by Thomas Buckle, in 1867, for the Church Sunday school; and by William Sinclair, in 3869, for coal and blankets to the poor. Edgar Meynell esq. of Old Elvet, Durham, is lord of the manor. The principal landowners are Lady Payne-Frankland, of Thirkleby Park, Reginald Bell esq. of Thirsk Hall, and John Seavers Richardson esq. The soil is light gravelly; subsoil, gravel. The chief crops are barley, clover, turnips and wheat. The area is 2,609 acres of land and 9 of watery rateable value, £14,742; the population in 1911 was 2,201.
