Historical Description

SOYLAND is a village and moorland township, and a polling place for the Northern division of the Riding, in Morley wapentake, and in the parish, county court district union and rural deanery of Halifax, archdeaconry of Craven, and diocese of Ripon, extending to the borders of Lancashire and including within its boundaries part of the mountainous region of Blackstone Edge: soyland is within the church district of Ripponden, from which it is distant half a mile, and is ½ miles south-west from Halifax, being governed by a Local Board of Health of 6 members. Here is a Congregational chapel. The Wesleyans have a chapel at stones and the Methodist New Connexion at Soyland Town. There are charities of £20 yearly value. There are several cotton mills, and the large silk mill of Messrs. Hadwen and sons. Sackville Walter Lane Fox esq. is lord of the manor. John Wilkinson Wheelwright, Richard Ridehalgh, George Hadweaand W. Brisco esqs. are chief landowners. The soil is various; subsoil, grit; it is principally grazing land. The area of the township of Soyland is 4,270 acres; rateable value, £11,934; population in 1871, 3,264.
