Historical Description

SPENNITHORNE is a parish, township and village, on the north side of Wensleydale, with a station on the Hawes branch of the North Eastern railway, 1 mile north from the village, and is 2 miles east-south-east from Leyburn and 2 north-east from Middleham, in the Richomod division of the Riding, wapentake and petty sessional division of West Hang, Leyburn union and county court district, rural deanery of West Catterick, archdeaconry of Richomod and diocese of Ripon. The church of St. Michael is an ancient building of stone, erected on the site of a Saxon edifice, of which some traces remain, but is chiefly in the Norman, Early English and Perpendicular styles, and consists of chancel, nave, aisles, chapel, south porch and an embattled western tower containing 3 bells and a new clock, presented by Major Stobart, of Spennithorne House, and set in motion on Christmas Day, 1908: the south arcade of the nave is Norman and the north Decorated: the chancel retains a singular sedile of stone, consisting of one long bench: built into the east wall of the chancel are two stones of Runic character and a Saxon monument, discovered under the floor of the chancel, is now placed in the wall of the vestry: in 1894 a brass lectern was presented and a stained window erected by his parishioners and friends to the memory of the Rev. Christopher Edward Wyvill M.A. rector 1869—92: Robert, son of Ribald, surnamed Fitz-Randolph, in 1166 rebuilt the church, and of this structure three arches exist; in the next generation the chancel was lengthened to its present dimensions, and furnished with a stone altar, credence table, piscina and sedilia, another arch added to the north aisle, and the tower, south aisle, porch and vestry erected. During the 15th century the church underwent further alteration: in the north aisle is a long plain tomb of freestone, to the Fitz-Randolph family; it has no inscription, but exhibits a series of armorial shields on the front and ends: two wall paintings at the north and south entrances may also be ascribed to this period: in the 17th century some alterations were made by William Appleton esq. an inhabitant of Harmby, at his sole cost, and in 1772 a gallery was put up, but has since been removed. The church was again restored and reseated in 1872, when also a pulpit, prayer desk and lectern of old oak were provided, and a font of Caen stone erected with a handsome cover, executed by John Winsby, of Leyburn: a silver flagon and other ornaments were presented, and several stained windows inserted: in the church are marble tablets to the Chaytor and Straubenzee families, and monuments to the Scropes, barons Scrope of Danby. The church plate includes an ancient tazza dated 1573, which was presented in 1673 by Thomas Bouth D.D. the then rector. There are 300 sittings. The registers date from the year 1573. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £325. derived from 434 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Marmaduke D’Arcy Wyvill esq. and held since 1893 by the Rev. James Seymour Attridge M.A. of University College, Durham The Hon. Mrs. A. C. Orde-Powlett, of Thorney Hall, and Capt. Clervaux Alexander Chaytor, of Spennithorne Hall, are the principal landowners. The soil is loamy; subsoil, limestone. The land is principally pasture. The area of the township is 1,293 acres of land and 11 of water; rateable value, £1,722; the population in 1911 was 174 in the township and 365 in the ecclesiastical parish.
