The parish includes the townships of Spofforth-with-Stockeld, Follifoot, Plompton, Little Ribston and Linton. The Crimple beck passes through the village. The church of All saints, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles and square tower containing 4 bells and a clock, is an ancient stone building, originally in the Perpendicular style, but was rebuilt with the exception of the tower in 1855, at a cost of £2,400, raised by subscriptions and rates; it is now a Norman church, with square tower containing 4 bells, the first bearing the inscription, “Venite exultemus Domino, 1693;” the second has no date, but a Latin inscription now hardly legible and is believed to have come from Fountains Abbey; the third is inscribed “God save our church, 1609;” the large bell bears date 1609, and has also a Latin inscription. The register dates from the year 1547, but is greatly mutilated. The living is a rectory, yearly value £1,500 with residence and exclusive of 60 acres of glebe land, in the gift of Lord Leconfield, and held by the Hon. and Rev. Henry Augustus stanhope M.A., Christ Church, Oxford. The charities are £8 8s. 4d. a year. Here are the remains of an ancient castle, formerly the property of the Percy family, but after the battle of Towton, so fatal to the Lancastrians, in which the Earl of Northumberland and Sir Charles Percy, his brother, were slain, their estates were laid waste by the conquerors, and this mansion being dismantled, was reduced from a princely palace to a heap of ruins; it is now the property of Lord Leconfield. Lord Leconfield, who is lord of the manor, the Earl of Harewood, and William Middleton esq. are the chief landowners. Stockeld Park, the residence of William Middleton esq. is a handsome old stone building, standing in a well-wooded park. The soil is loamy; subsoil, gravel and clay.
