Historical Description

SPROTBROUGH is a parish, comprising the townships of Sprotbrough and Cadeby and the hamlets of Cusworth and Newton, in the Southern division of the Riding, Doncaster union and county court district, north division of Strafforth and Tickhill wapentake, rural deanery of Doncaster, and archdeaconry and diocese of York. The river Don bounds this parish to a distance of 5 miles southwest of Doncaster. The village of Sprotbrough is pleasant and well built, and is 3 miles south-west from Doncaster, and about 1 mile from Sprotbrough station on the south Yorkshire railway; the station is 16 miles from Sheffield, 12 from Barnsley, and 160 from London, and is on the other side of the Don in the parish of Warmsworth. The church of St. Mary is a Gothic stone building, consisting of a noble chancel, nave with clerestory, aisles, a tower containing 6 bells, dating from 1770, and supposed to have been cast from the metal of the old Doncaster bells, vestry, and north and south porches: the church has a fine ceiling, carved pulpit and reading desk, an ancient canopied font, and a rich Gothic screen; two tattered flags, said to have belonged to the army of Charles I. a helmet and spurs are preserved in the church, which also contains a parish chest of solid oak, and a very old and curious bier: there are several highly finished altar tombs and monuments of the Fitzwilliam and Copley families, and a remarkable stone chair, with sculptured figures of Thor and Saturn. The register dates from the year 1539, and is in good condition. The living is a rectory, with Cadeby annexed, yearly value £789 with residence and 40 acres of glebe land, in the gift of Sir Joseph William Copley bart. of Sprotbrough Hall, and held by the Rev. Arthur Henry Faber M.A. of New College, Oxford. The Rectory house is in the Tudor style, with a greenhouse to the south front, and beautiful gardens adjoining. The Sunday school is held at the village school room. There is a charity of £2 yearly value, called Wormeley’s Dole, paid by Andrew F. W. Montagu esq. of High Melton, and distributed among the communicants of the parish church of Sprotbrough; also a sum of 13s. 4d. called Cartwright’s Dole, paid half-yearly, on the first Sunday in April and the first Sunday in July, at Brodsworth church, to the poorest man or woman of the parish of Sprotbrough and of Cadeby-with-Melton and of Newton-with-Cusworth. alternately; and an annual rent of £2 10s. from an acre of land, paid by Sir William: Ridley Charles Cooke bart. out of his estate all Arksey, to the churchwardens of Sprotbrough. An annual rent of £3 paid by the River Don Navigation Company to the same churchwardens for a plot of land in Sprotbrough parish, opposite the Doncaster Millbridge, is applied to the repairs of the parish church of Sprotbrough. Sprotbrough manor anciently belonged to the Fitzwilliam family, one of whom founded an hospital here, dedicated to St. Edmund, prior to 1363, which flourished till the Dissolution, when its revenue was returned at £9 13s. 11d. The manor subsequently became the property of the Copley family, of whom Sir Godfrey built the present mansion, in the reign of Charles II. and whose descendant, Sir Joseph William Copley bart. J.P. is now the lord. The Hall is a spacious and handsome stone mansion, standing on an extensive and well-wooded lawn, and consists of a centre and two wings, in the Grecian style; it contains many stately apartments, a numerous library and a valuable collection of pictures; the gardens are extensive and full of shrubs, the grounds tastefully laid out and embellished with woods and plantations; in the midst of the grounds is an enormous wych elm tree, the trunk of which, is twenty feet round and the spread of the boughs 500 feet. Over the river Don is a beautiful bridge in the Grecian style, 300 feet long, built at the sole expense of Sir Joseph William Copley bart. whose arms are placed on one of the arches. Sir Joseph William Copley bart. is lord of the manor. Sir Joseph William Copley bart. Richard Heber Wrightson esq. of Cusworth. Andrew F. W. Montagu esq. of High Melton, and the rector are the chief landowners. The soil is loam and lime; the subsoil, limestone. The chief crops are wheat, barley, turnips, rape and clover. The area of the parish in 3,923 acres and of the township 2,701; rateable value, £5,374: and the population in 1871 was of the township 339, and of the parish 476.
