Historical Description

SPROATLEY is a parish, township and village, on the Hull and Aldbrough road, 4 miles north from Hedon station on the Hull and Withernsea branch of the North Eastern railway and 7 north-east-by-east from Hall, in the Holderness division of the Riding, middle division of the wapentake of Holderness, Middle Holderness petty sessional division, union of Skirlaugh, county court district of Hedon, rural deanery of Hedon, archdeaconry of the East Riding and diocese of York. The church of St. Swithin, erected in 1886 on the site of the old fabric, is a plain edifice of white brick in the Gothic style, consisting of chancel, nave, north porch and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles, containing 2 old bells, 8 tubular bells given by the rector in 1888 and a clock, presented in 1898 by Mrs. Sumpner: during the process of some excavations made in the churchyard an old stone coffin lid and an ancient tombstone were discovered; the former hears on it a kind of staff, over which is a chalice, and above this a paten with portions of the Host, which a hand, proceeding from one side of the stone, is in the act of taking; on the opposite side is this inscription in Lombardic capitals: “+ ICI • GIT • WAVTER CHAPELAVN • T. .KAHINGAM PRIEZ • PVR • L’AME •”; the other is inscribed to the memory of Sir George Cave kt. and the date 1696: there are also brasses to Thomas English, of Hull, and James Culling; the stained east window was erected in 1891 by Mrs. Wall in memory of her husband, the Rev. Charles Joseph Wall M.A., J.P. rector 1858-89: the organ, built in 1710, was presented by Dr. Kendell in 1886: the church has about 200 sittings. A lych gate was erected in 1898 in commemoration of the Diamond Jubilee of Her late Majesty Queen Victoria. The register dates from the year 1657. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £180, including 80 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Miss Kendell, and held since 1889 by the Rev. Samuel Howard Hall M.A. of St. John’s College, Cambridge The Wesleyan chapel, built in 1804 and restored in 1904, is endowed with the interest of £20, left by Mrs. Hannan. The Institute was erected in 1913, at a cost of £420, and contains a hall to seat 230. A police station and a magistrates’ room for the middle division of Holderness were erected here in 1849. Mrs. Bridget-Biggs in 1773 bequeathed two-thirds of the rents of certain lands, together with the interest of a sum now invested in Consols, and bringing in an income of about £330 yearly, for educating and placing out 14 boys and 14 girls, each of whom on leaving school receives £2 10s. and, after being in a situation for one year, an additional £2 10s., John Raines esq. left by will, in 1805, the interest of £200, now amounting to about £9 yearly. The poor of the parish have also the rent of about 2 acres of land at Fitling, left in 1686 by Elizabeth Berier, and £1 yearly, left by an unknown donor, out of a farm at Lelley, in the parish of Preston. Amen field, consisting of 8 acres of land, situated, west of the church, yields £12 a year for the benefit of the parish clerk. In a field adjoining the church is a large glacial stone, rising 2 feet above the level of the ground, but of Unknown depth. Major Walter Geo. Raleigh Chichester Constable, of Burton Constable Hall, who is lord of the manor, and Miss Kendell are the principal landowners. The soil is clayey; subsoil, same. The chief crops are wheat, beans, oats and peas. The acreage is 1,372; rateable value, £1,984; the population in 1911 was 272.

Petty Sessions are held at the Police Station on the last Wednesday in the month (excepting Feb. & March, when they are held on the first Wednesday in the month) at 11 o’clock.

Public Elementary (Endowed) School, erected in 1868, for 150 children; average attendance, 70.
