Civil & Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction
Historical Description
In the parish of Stainborough, three miles from Barnsley, is Wentworth Castle, the seat of Henry Vernon, Esq., a most beautiful fabric, situated on an eminence, commanding a fine prospect down into the north, east, and west; and is surrounded by an extensive park. Within the house is a most elegant gallery, the length of which, from south to north, measures 180 feet by 24 within, ornamented in a most superb stile. On the east side of the house, in the park, runs a serpentine canal of considerable length, with a handsome stone bridge over it, of one arch.
Wentworth Castle occupies the site of an ancient fortress. It was built about the year 1730, by Thomas Earl of Strafford, a marble statue of whom, executed by Rysbrack, stands in the centre of the area.
STAINBOROUGH (or Stainbrough) is a township in the parish of Silkstone, Southern division of the Riding, Staincross wapentake and Barnsley union, county court district, and petty sessional division, and comprises the scattered hamlets of Stainborough, 2 ½ miles south-south-west from Barnsley; Hood Green, 3 south-west; Round Green, 2 south-west, and Stainborough Folds, 4 south-southwest. The church, or chapel, situated in Wentworth Castle Park, is a small handsome Gothic stone structure, rebuilt in 1841, consisting of a nave and square embattled tower with 1 bell, and contains an organ. The register is kept at Silkstone. The living is a donative, yearly value £80, in the gift of F. W. T. Vernon Wentworth esq. and held by the Rev. William Elmhirst M.A. of Trinity College, Oxford. Stainborough was a Roman Settlement. Wentworth Castle, the seat of Frederick William Thomas Vernon Wentworth esq. is a splendid mansion in the Grecian style, erected by the second and third Earls of Strafford, the east front in 1730, and the south front in 1768; it stands on a knoll, commanding some enchanting views of the vales below, and the country around, and is surrounded by an extensive and well-wooded park, interspersed with several elegant buildings, temples, towers, and monuments, with ornamental waters on the east; the mansion contains many spacious and elegant rooms, and a magnificent gallery, 180 feet long, 26 feet wide, and 30 feet high, with a large, choice, and valuable collection of paintings by ancient masters, statues, and elaborate carvings. F. W. T. Vernon Wentworth esq. who is lord of the manor, and the Rev. William Elmhirst, are the chief landowners. The soil is strong loam; subsoil, mineral. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and beans. The area is 1,719 acres; rateable value, £9,652; and the population in 1871 was 465.
Township school, Hood Green (for boys & girls), endowed with £8 a year, increased to £40, with house for the master, by F. W. T. Vernon Wentworth esq. & principally supported by him; William Robinson, master; Miss Hindell, mistress.
