Historical Description

STAINTON-CUM-HELLABY once a Roman Settlement, is a small village and parish, in the Southern division of the Riding, Doncaster union and county court district, south division of the wapentake of Strafforth and Tickhill, Doncaster rural deanery, archdeaconry and diocese of York, 2 miles west from the town of Tickhill and 7 from Doncaster. The church of St. Winifred, an ancient stone structure, erected in the twelfth or thirteenth century, consists of chancel, nave, south aisle, and a tower containing 3 bells: a window has been placed in the west end by J. Pashly esq. in memory of his eldest son, and there are several older memorials of the same kind, and some monumental tablets. The register dates from the year 1556. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £190, in the gift of the Earl of Scarbrough and held by the Rev. Charles Woollaston Manwaring M.A. of Trinity College, Dublin. The charities amount to £9, yearly. The Earl of Scarbrough is lord of the manor and principal landowner. The soil is clay and loam; subsoil, limestone. The chief crops are wheat, barley, turnips and pasture. The area is 2,857 acres; rateable value, £8,178 4s.; population in 1871, 258.
