Historical Description

STAINTON is a parish, township and village, 4 ½ miles south-east from Thornaby-on-Tees station on the North Eastern railway, 5 north-by-west of Stokesley and 5 east-north-east from Yarm, in the Cleveland division of the Riding, west division of Langbaurgh liberty, petty sessional division of Thornaby-on-Tees, union and county court district of Middlesbrough, rural deanery of Stokesley, archdeaconry of Cleveland and diocese of York. The church of SS. Peter and Paul is an ancient building of stone in mixed styles, consisting of chancel, nave, north transept, west porch and an embattled western tower, with crocketed pinnacles and turret, containing 3 bells: in the chancel are many marble monuments of the Pennyman family of Ormesby: the church was restored during the years 1881—4, a cost of £535, and the nave and transept in 1902, out of money left for that purpose, by the late Miss Anne Elizabeth Appleton: it affords 250 sittings. The register dates from the year 1551. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £232, including 81 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Archbishop of York, and held since 1902 by the Rev. John Rawlings M.A. of Queens’ College, Cambridge. Here is a Wesleyan chapel, built in 1840. In 1817 Mrs. Mary Burdon left a yearly stipend of £5 5s. for educating six poor children There are also other small charities left to the poor of Stainton. The principal landowners are the Earl of Harewood K.C.V.O. James Worsley Pennyman esq. J.P. of Ormesby Hall and Col. Robert Claverley Alington Bewicke-Copley, of Sprotborough Hall. The soil is clayey; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, oats, barley, beans and potatoes. The area of the township is 2,306 acres; rateable value, £2,269; the population in 1911 was 332 in the township and 761 in the ecclesiastical parish.
