The Danes were defeated, and their king killed. The battle was fought only about ten days before the invasion of William the Conqueror. This place was afterwards called Battle-bridge, but at present it preserves its ancient name.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

EAST STAMFORD BRIDGE is a township and village, with a station, called Stamford Bridge, on the North Eastern railway, and is 7 ¾ miles east-north-east from York, 7 north-west from Pocklington and 13 ¼ north-west from Market Weighton; it is in the Howdenshire division of the Riding, Catton civil parish, Wilton Beacon division of the wapentake of Harthill, Wilton Beacon petty sessional division, Pocklington union and county court district, rural deanery of Pocklington, archdeaconry of the East Riding and diocese of York; the village is pleasantly seated on the east bank of the navigable river Derwent and the York, Driffield and Bridlington road: the York and Market Weighton railway here crosses the Derwent by a viaduct of fifteen arches of brick and one in the centre of iron. The road crosses the river by an ancient stone bridge of three arches. The memorable battle of Stamford Bridge, between the English, under Harold II. and the Northmen, led by Tostig, brother of Harold, and his ally, Hardrada, a king of Norway, was fought here Sept. 25, 1066: both the leaders of the invading force were slain and their army totally defeated: human remains, supposed to be those of soldiers killed in the engagement, have been met with on the site. Burtonfields Hall, the residence of William M. Harrison esq. J.P. is a modem mansion, in a pleasant park, surrounded with plantations. Lord Leconfield, who is lord of the manor, and Thomas Coates esq. of Harrogate, are the chief landowners. The soil is loam, clay and sand; subsoil, clay &c. The chief crops are wheat, potatoes, barley and oats. The area is 1,110 acres of land and 12 of water; rateable value, £2,920; the population in 1911 was 358.
