Historical Description
STANLEY-CUM-WRENTHORPE are two hamlets, forming a township in the ancient parish of Wakefield, partly within the municipal and parliamentary borough of Wakefield, and were united as en ecclesiastical parish in 1830; the formes is on the west bank of the river Calder, which divides the townshop from the parish of Normanton and is distant 2 miles north-north-east from Wakefield, 2 ½ from Normanton railway station, 8 from Leeds, and 198 from London; it is a polling place for the Southern division of the Riding, in the lower division of Agbrigg wapentake, Wakefield union county court district land rural deanery, archdeaconry of Craven, diocese of Ripon and province of York. A branch of the Great Northern railway runs between East Ardsley and Castleford and has two stations here, one at Lake Lock and the other at Oatwood. Wrenthorpe, 1 ½ miles north from Wakefield, contains a district called Potovens, owing to its having formerly had several potteries of coarse earthenware, the last of which was discontinued at the beginning of the century. The church of St. Peter, standing on an eminence at Lake Lock, is a building in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave and aisles, with two handsome octagonal turrets and 1 bell: this edifice was commenced in 1821 by the Ecclesiastical Commissioners and was completed in 1825, at a cost of about £12,000, being subsequently altered at a cost of £1,200, defrayed by the late John Maude esq. of Moor House; there are 744 sittings, of which 185 are free. The register dates from the year 1825. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £210 with good residence, in the gift of the vicar of Wakefield and held by the Rev. Richard Burrell M.A. of Christ's College, Cambridge. Ourwood is an ecclesiastical parish formed in 1861 from the parish of Stanley, 2 miles north of Wakefield. The church of St. Mary Magdalene, erected in 1858 at a cost of £2,180, is a building in the Decorated style of the thirteenth century, consisting of chancel, nave and north aisle and has 400 sittings, all free. The register dates from the year 1858. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £100. in the gift, of the vicar of Stanley and held by the Rev. Samuel Vercoe. St. Anne’s church, at Wreathorpe, is a red brick building, erected in 1874, at a cost of £2,000, and Consists of chancel and nave with a small wooden bell turret: the east and two other windows are stained; a screen divides the nave from the chancel; there are 300 sittings. The register dates from the year 1875. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £100, in the gift of the Rev. H.R. Bramley, and held by the Rev. Francis Dudley B.A. S.C.L. of St. Alban Hall, Oxford. There are chapels for Wesleyans at Stanley Lane End, Lee Moor and Newton Lane End, and for Primitive Methodists at Stanley Lane End, Newton Lane End, Wrenthorpe, Lingwell Nook and Bottom Boat, and for Congregationalists at Lake Lock. The Cottage Hospital at Stanley Lane End. for nursing the sick and aged and disabled poor, was erected by subscription in 1867, at a cost of £530. Taylor’s and Foster's charity, £210 yearly, is distributed to the aged poor on St. Thomas’ Day. In Ouchthorpe lane are two almshouses for poor widows, purchased with £50 left by Miss Ann Harrison. In the township of Stanley are several collieries, worked by Messrs. J. and J. Charlesworth. Messrs. Robert Hudson and Co. and the Lofthouse Colliery Limited. The coals found in this township, which are of a good quality, are conveyed by tram roads from the various collieries to Stanley Ferry and Bottom Boat, whence they are sent in lighters on the river Calder, also by the Great Northern railway. The Water Works, built in 1838, from which the town of Wakefield is also supplied, are situate in Ferry Lane and Ouchthorpe Lane, their supplies being drawn from the river Calder. The West Riding Pauper Lunatic Asylum is in this parish. The Aire and Calder Navigation Company have a yard here for repairing their vessels; the canal is carried by an aqueduct across the Calder at Stanley Ferry. Bricks are made in the township, band and twine spinning carried on and the manufacture of alum. At Lingwell Gate, some years ago, a large quantity of clay moulds were found, which had been used for making base Roman coin. In this township and near to Field Head, is Pindar’s Field, said to be the spot on which Robin Hood, Little John and Scarlett fought the Pindar of Wakefield. From an eminence above Lakh Lock, formerly a Roman station, a Capital prospect is obtained of the surrounding neighbourhood. Hatfeild Hall, John Barff Charlesworth esq. J.P.; Stanley Grange, Frederick Howarth esq.; Stanley Hall and Moorhouse are pleasant seats here. The chief landed proprietors are Lord Conyers, lord of the manor; James Hatfeild Hayter esq. of Cranfield, Newport Pagnall, Bucks; The Hon. Mrs. Meynell Ingram, of Temple Newsam; Lord Grantley; J. and J. Charlesworth esqrs.; Captain Richard Lucas, of Edith Wotton, and the Rev. Shepley Waston Watson, of Bootle Rectory, Carnforth. The population in 1871 of the ecclesiastical parishes was St. Peter 3,974, St. Mary Magdalene 3,004, of the township 10,305; the area of Stanley-cum-Wrenthorpe is 4,674 acres, of which 3,187a. 1r. 1p. are in Stanley, each township maintaining its own highways; the area of the ecclesiastical parishes is St. Peter, 3,000 acres, St. Mary Magdalene 2,288 acres; rateable value, £46,143 5s. 5d. The township of Stanley-cum-Wrenthorpe comprises Parklodge lane, Park hill, the Water Work's and all the northern suburbs of Wakefield, together with the hamlets of Eastmoor, Wrenthorpe, Outwood and Carrgate, Stanley Ferry, Lofthouse Gate, Lake Lock, Bottom Boat, Stanley Lane End, Newton Lane End, Lingwell Gate, Lee Moor and a part of Newton, a portion of which is in the township of Alverthorpe-cum-Thornes.
