Historical Description

STANWICK ST. JOHN is a township and parish, on a small stream called “Clobeck,” and about 2 miles from the great Roman road leading from Catterick Bridge to Piercebridge, 3 ½ miles south from Piercebridge station on the Barnard Castle and south Durham section of the North Eastern railway, 8 west from Darlington and 7 north from Richmond, and is in the Richmond division of the Riding, wapentake and petty sessional division of Gilling West, union and county court district of Richmond, rural deanery of Richmond East, archdeaconry of Richmond and diocese of Ripon. The church of St. John the Baptist is an ancient building of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, transept, nave, south porch and an embattled western tower containing 3 bells: it was restored in the year 1863 by the late Eleanor, Duchess of Northumberland: the chancel retains a sedile on the south side, and at the east end of the south aisle is a recumbent marble effigy in armour of Sir Hugh Smithson bart. d. 1670, and another of Dorothy (Rawstnorne), his wife; on the north-east wall is a marble monument to three daughters of a former Duke of Northumberland, with a recumbent figure of one of these: the stained east window is a memorial to Algernon, 4th Duke of Northumberland K.G., P.C., F.R.S, and an admiral, d. 12 Feb. 1865, and was erected in 1868 by his tenants and friends; a stained window was erected in 1912 in memory of Eleanor, Duchess of Northumberland, d. 4 May, 1911: the church affords sittings for 280 persons. The register dates from the year 1693. The living is a vicarage with Caldwell annexed, net yearly value £210, including 17 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Wm. Henry Anthony Wharton esq. of Skelton Castle, and held since 1886 by the Rev. Henry Pollexfen M.A. of Pembroke College, Cambridge. The parish tithe was commuted at about £1,050, and is impropriated. Here are the remains of some very extensive entrenchments, called the “Jack Dike Arches,” the ramparts of which, in the field adjoining the church, cannot be less than fifteen feet high.

A collection of bronze ornaments, fragments of horse furniture, and weapons of war, together with some large iron hoops, presumed to be wheel tires, were found near here and have been deposited in the British Museum. Stanwick Park is the seat of Earl Percy; the mansion is an ancient edifice in a well-wooded park of about 60 acres, and was for many generations the residence of the Smithson family: the hall was much enlarged by the late Duke of Northumberland, and contains a valuable collection of paintings. The Duke of Northumberland K.G., P.C. is lord of the manor and principal landowner. The soil is chiefly loamy; the subsoil is limestone. The chief crops are wheat, oats, barley and turnips, with a large portion of land in pasture. The acreage of the township is 1,398; rateable value, £1,492; the population in 1911 was 130 in the township and 694 in the ecclesiastical Darish.
