Historical Description

STARTFORTH. at one time called Stratford or Stretford, is an ancient parish, township and village on the banks of the river Tees, which separates the counties of York and Durham, 1 ½ miles south from Barnard Castle station on the Tees Valley section of the North Eastern railway, 14 miles north-west from Richmond and 16 west from Darlington, in the Richmond division of the Riding, wapentake of Gilling West, petty sessional division of Greta Bridge, union of Teesdale, county court district of Barnard Castle, rural deanery of Richmond North, archdeaconry of Richmond and diocese of Ripon; a stone bridge of two arches crossing the Tees connects Startforth with Barnard Castle, and there is also a light iron foot bridge leading to the main street of Barnard Castle, erected in place of a previous bridge destroyed by a great river flood 9th March, 1881. The church of Holy Trinity, standing on the site of an earlier Transition Norman church, was rebuilt in 1863, at a cost of £1,700, and is an edifice of stone in the Decorated style, consisting of chancel, nave and a western tower with spire, containing 2 bells taken from the old church, one of which was cast in 1720, and bears the inscription, “Voco, Veni Precare”: there are in the church an 18th century font and two ancient tombstones, one having a recumbent figure believed to represent Helen-de-Hastings, patroness of the living in the 13th century, and the other figures of Sir Thomas Bland and his wife: the stained east window is a memorial to the Rev. H. Kendall, a former vicar, d. 1867, and there are other stained windows: the reredos, of Caen stone and Irish granite, presented by Miss Milner, is a memorial to William Feilding, d. 1539, and to George Feilding, major 23rd regt. Royal Welsh Fusiliers, d. 1830, both of Startforth Hall; the communion service, of massive silver, was the joint gift of Mrs. Bowness and Mrs. Featherstone: there are 270 sittings. The register dates from the year 1665. The living is a discharged vicarage, net yearly value £206, including 15 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Earl of Lonsdale (whose ancestor, Sir John Lowther, purchased the advowson and right of patronage in 1629), and held since 1904 by the Rev. Aaron Lewis Manby BA. of St. John’s College, Cambridge, and surrogate. The charities are of £3 13s. 4d. yearly value. On the banks of the Tees, in this parish, are the mills of Messrs. Ullathorne and Co. thread manufacturers. Startforth Hall, which was the home of the Feildings for many generations, from the reign of Henry VIII. is the property of the representatives of the late Mrs. Haslewood and Mrs. Birch, descendants of that family, and is now occupied by Bryan Edward Cookson esq.: it is very pleasantly situated a short distance from the church. The principal landowners are Cecil W. Hutchinson esq. of Eggleston Hall, and David M. Spence esq. of 10 Fern-wood road, Newcastle-on-Tyne. The soil is loamy; the Subsoil, clayey. The crops are wheat, oats, barley and turnips, and a large portion pasture land. The area of the township is 989 acres of land and 19 of water; rateable value, £2,963; the population in 1911 was 475 in the township and 661 in the parish.

R. townships in Teesdale union. The area is 97,618 acres; rateable value at Michaelmas, 1912, £77,376; the population in 1911 was 4,929.

Public Elementary school (Morritt memorial) (mixed), built in 1877 by the late Mrs. Morritt, at a cost of £2,000, for 170 children; average attendance, 120.
