Historical Description

STAVELEY is a parish, village and station on the North-Eastern railway, situated 7 miles south-east from Ripon, 4 from Knaresborough, 3 from Boroughbridge, 211 ¾ from London and 20 ¾ from York, in the Eastern division of the Riding, Knaresborough county court district, Lower division of the wapentake of Claro, Great Ouseburn union, rural deanery of Knaresborough, Richmond archdeaconry and diocese of Ripon. The church of All saints is a handsome Early English building of stone, rebuilt in 1864—5, consisting of chancel, nave and western tower with spire and 3 bells; there are several stained windows, one of which, in the chancel, was erected in 1874 in memory of the Rev. J. B. Hartley, late rector of this parish, by his widow; another on the south side has been placed by the Freeman family: there is also a monument to Mrs. Anne Lakin; and in the churchyard a Runic cross: the pulpit and font are modern, and of Caen stone: the church will hold 234 persons, and cost about £3,000. The register dates from the year 1582, and is in good condition. The living is a rectory, yearly value £350, with residence, in the gift of the Rev. Alfred Octavius Hartley, and held by the Rev. Edward Ponsonby Knubley M.A. of Magdalene College, Cambridge. On Loftus Hill stands the residence of Samuel James Brown esq. J.P. a square brick building, approached from the Boroughbridge road by a carriage drive through highly cultivated grounds. Spellow Hill, the residence of William Culley Stobart esq. is a fine square building, situated in a well-wooded park overlooking Staveley, and commanding a fine view of the surrounding country. The Duke of Devonshire is lord of the manor. The principal landowners are William Culley Stobart esq. Captain Thomas Slingsby and the Rector. The poors’ land of 4a. 2r. produces £15 yearly. The soil is various; subsoil, generally clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. The area is 1,375 acres; rateable value, £2,683; population in 1871 was 318.
