Historical Description

STILLINGFLEET is a parish and township, bounded on the west by the river Ouse, which here divides the East from the West Riding, and is 2 miles south-west from Escrick station on the Doncaster extension of the main line of the North Eastern railway and 7 south from York, in the Howdenshire division of the Riding, Ouse and Derwent wapentake and petty sessional division, York union and county court district, rural deanery of Escrick, archdeaconry of the East Riding and diocese of York. The church of St. Helen, partially rebuilt, as is supposed, in 1600, on the site of a much older structure, is an edifice of stone in the Norman and later styles, consisting of chancel and nave, and a tower at the west end, partly of Norman date, with an embattled parapet and pinnacles, containing a clock and 3 bells: the whole was restored in 1877, at a cost of £3,000, and the church now affords 300 sittings. The register dates from the year 1598. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £320, including about 113 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Governors of St. Peter’s School, York, and held since 1884 by the Rev. Alexander Grimston M.A. of Trinity Hall, Cambridge, canon and prebendary of York. The principal landowners are Hon. Irene C. Lawley, who is lady of the manor, and Henry Edward Preston esq. of Middlethorpe, York. The soil is gravelly loam; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, oats, potatoes and turnips. The area of Stillingfleet with Moreby township is 2,584 acres of land, a of water, 17 of tidal water and 4 of foreshore; rateable value, £2,195; the population in 1911 was 326 in the township and 620 in the ecclesiastical parish.
