Historical Description
STOCKTON-ON-THE-FOREST is a parish, township and village, on the east side of the ancient forest of Galtres, with a station, named Warthill, three-quarters of a mile north-west from the village, on the York and Market Weighton branch of the North Eastern railway, and is 5 miles north-east from York, in the Thirsk and Malton division of the Riding, Bulmer wapentake, petty sessional division of Bulmer East, York union and county court district, and rural deanery of Bulmer, archdeaconry of Cleveland and diocese of York. The church of Holy Trinity is an edifice of white brick, in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, porch, baptistery, vestries and organ chamber, and a western tower with spire containing 4 bells, presented by G. W. Lloyd esq. in memory of Miss Lloyd: in 1895 the church was considerably enlarged at a cost of £2,500: the stained east window was presented by Miss Agar and Mrs. Barstow and there are several other memorial windows to the Kershaw and Pearson families: the organ is a memorial to Miss Lloyd: the font was presented by a former rector and his wife in memory of two of their children: there are sittings for 180 persons. The register dates from the year 1653. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £270, including 5 acres of glebe, with re si derice, in the gift of the Archbishop of York, and held since 1902 by the Rev. Ellis Charles Mackie B.A. of St. John’s College, Cambridge. The Wesleyans have a place of worship here. The Church Institute, Beading Boom and Lending Library, established in 1836, is supplied with newspapers and periodicals, and has about 200 volumes of books. There is a branch here of the Yorkshire Penny Bank Limited. About miles north of the village stands the shaft of an ancient cross about 6 feet in height. Stockton Hall, a handsome structure of brick, with pleasure grounds attached, is the property and residence of George William Lloyd esq. M.A., J.P. Charles T. Agar esq. of Brockfield, who is lord of the manor, George W. Lloyd esq. and the Rev. Canon J. H. Rawdon M.A. of The Hermitage, are the principal landowners. The soil is sandy; the subsoil, clay and sand. The principal crops are corn, potatoes and rye. The area is 3,265 acres of land and 3 of water; rateable value, £3,679; population in 1911, 403.
The school Committee consists of 6 managers, four foundation, one appointed by Parish & one by the County Authority; Geo. Wm. Lloyd esq. chairman of managers; Rev. Ellis Charles Mackie, correspondent Public Elementary school, erected in 1856, at the expense of the late Miss Lloyd, was endowed with £10 a year for teaching 10 free scholars, but it is now free for 120 children; average attendance, 60. There is a master’s residence attached.
